Rep. Joe Farias of San Antonio spoke to an attentive crowd at the July 27 luncheon at the Hyatt in Austin. In the biography on The House of Representatives website, the legislator is characterized as "fighting for an agenda that rewards hard work, meets our obligation to those most in need, and gives every child an equal chance to succeed." The representative's commitment to children, education, and libraries was evidenced in his remarks to the attentive and appreciative gathering of library leaders.

Other Assembly activities included open discussions on TLA districts, school library standards, and an association brand; training sessions on wikis, Google docs, and webmaster access to txla.org; committee, executive board, and council meetings; and, of course, non-stop conference program planning. Displays and booths circled behind the registration area on Tuesday, affording convenient visits with some of TLA's favorite library vendors. For attendees not too tired to party into the night, an evening bat cruise offered a welcome diversion and opportunity for leisurely visits (aka, networking). You can see Walter Betts' documentation of that activity on Flickr.
