Remembering Margaret Nichols, Former TLA President

The Texas library community mourns the passing of Margaret Irby Nichols who died on June 6, 2017 in Denton.  A Texas Library Association (TLA) president in 1984-85, Margaret was widely known for her integrity, dignity, and charismatic personality.

2017-2018 Tejas Star Reading List Announced

Recommended Bilingual and Spanish Reading List

AUSTIN – Texas librarians announced the best bilingual and Spanish books for children in April at the 2017 TLA Annual Conference in San Antonio. The Tejas Star Reading List consists of recommended Spanish and/or bilingual books, selected by librarians comprised of the Texas Association of School Librarians (TASL), the Children’s Round Table (CRT), the Public Library Division (PLD), and the Latino Caucus.

85th Texas Legislative Session Ends

The 85th session of the Texas Legislature came to an end on Monday, May 29 with Senate and House leaders pointing fingers and casting blame on which chamber bears responsibility for the fact that a special session is likely to be called.

It is the last week of the 85th Texas Legislative Session and we are down to the wire! 

Two library-related bills are on the House Calendar tomorrow, Tuesday, May 23 which is the last day the House may pass Senate bills.

Update on Executive Director Search Process

The TLA Executive Director Search Committee, chaired by TLA 2016-2017 President Walter Betts, received more than 40 applications. Of the seven candidates selected at the first screening stage, four submitted Phase 1 materials which included a writing piece and a webinar. A focus group of 14 TLA membership representatives and the Search Committee participated in the Phase 1 evaluation.

Support Library Funding: Contact TX Senators Cornyn & Cruz Today!

May 19 is the deadline for US Senators to sign the letters supporting LSTA and IAL funding.

Thanks to your efforts generating support in the House of Representatives for FY 2018 LSTA and IAL funding in the form of Member signatures on our champions’ “Dear Appropriator” letters, we succeeded in topping last year’s signer totals by 14% for IAL and a fabulous 64% for LSTA, netting a full third of all House Members on each letter!
