TEA Seeks Input on ESSA Implementation

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has launched an online survey offering parents, taxpayers and the general public an avenue to provide input on the state's implementation of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The deadline for completing the ESSA Public Input Survey is November 18.

ESSA and Texas School Libraries

The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA), which replaces No Child Left Behind, includes new library-related provisions that identify effective school library programs as essential to the education of school children. ESSA does not define an effective school library program, nor does it require or mandate school librarian staffing, whether certified or not.

Do Districts Have to Hire Librarians?   

In Texas, school districts have discretionary authority over school library staffing and programs. Neither state nor federal statute requires that a school librarian be assigned to every campus.  However, state regulations do address library facilities, certified librarians, and state standards for school libraries.

Each year, TLA honors individuals, libraries, supporters, and projects with the TLA Awards; and the association depends on its membership to identify worthy candidates. Chances are you have someone in your library system or in your life that you always say deserves an award for the work that they’re doing, the projects or programs they’re leading, or the support that they’re giving in their community.

TALL Texans Leadership Institute Applications are Open

Application forms for the 2017 TALL Texans Institute are open as of October 1 and must be submitted by January 27. This seminar, which trains 24 librarians from all types of libraries on advanced leadership and management techniques, will be held July 16-20 at the Montserrat Retreat Center in Lake Dallas, TX.
