The 2X2 Reading List is a project of the Children’s Round Table, a unit of the Texas Library Association.

Texas Library Association sponsors the 2X2 Reading List solely to encourage free voluntary reading.

Titles on the 2x2 lists are paired with activities to make reading together even more fun.

Suggestions of books for the committee to consider for inclusion on the reading list may be made by librarians, teachers and parents.

Points to consider when recommending a book for consideration by the 2x2 committee.

  1. You must have read the book.

  2. The content of the book must be age appropriate for children two years through grade two.       

  3. The copyright date must be 2014 for the 2015 list.

  4. Only book formats are eligible.

  5. The book must have an English text, but dual language and translations will be considered.

  6. The book must have received a favorable review in a reviewing source.

  7. Ineligible categories of materials are textbooks, abridgments, and new editions or portions of books previously published.

Suggestions for the next list must be submitted by November 15, 2014

Blechman, Nicholas. Night Light. Orchard Books. ISBN 978-0545462631. $16.99. Ages 3-5. What vehicle is behind the die-cut circles?  Count the circles, turn the page and see!

Boudreau, Helene. I Dare You Not to Yawn. Illustrated by Serge Bloch. Candlewick. ISBN 978-0763650704.  $15.99. Ages 4-8.  A little boy shares his advice in this cautionary tale about sneaky yawns and their consequences.

Eaton, Jason Carter. How to Train a Train. Illustrated by John Rocco.  Candlewick.  ISBN 978-0763663070. $16.99. Ages 4-8. So, you don’t want a dog or cat, but what you really want is a pet train? This guidebook shares all the information you will need to prepare for your mechanical friend.

Heder, Thyra. Fraidyzoo. Abrams. ISBN 978-1419707766. $16.95. Ages 4-8. Little T is afraid of going to the zoo, so her family imaginatively creates all the scary animals she may see. She’s soon ready for the trip, but then her family encounters a creature more frightening than any zoo animal.

Kimmel, Eric A.  Little Red Hot Illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith. Amazon. ISBN 978-1477816387. $17.99. Ages 4-8.  Once upon a time there was a Texas gal named Little Red Hot who loved to eat chili peppers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Her favorite spicy treat is hot pepper pie; delicious and just the answer for getting rid of the cold germs that have her grandmother feeling under the weather. 

Leathers, Philippa. The Black Rabbit. Candlewick. ISBN 978-0763657147. $14.00. Ages 3-6. Rabbit tries to run and hide, but the black rabbit is always there. Why won't he go away?

Lee, Mark.  20 Big Trucks In The Middle of the Street. Illustrated by Kurt Cyrus. Candlewick. ISBN 978-0763658090. $15.99. Ages 3-7.  An ice cream truck breaks down in the middle of the street and a traffic jam of epic proportions ensues. A mail truck, a crane truck and more fill the street. How will all of the trucks make their deliveries on time?  

Matheson, Christie.  Tap the Magic Tree. HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0062274458.  $15.99.  Ages 2-7. Touch and tap the magic tree and go through the four seasons in this highly interactive book.

Mortensen, Denise Dowling. Bug Patrol. Illustrated by Cece Bell. Clarion. ISBN 978-061879024. $16.99. Ages 4-8.  There are problems in Bug City, and Bug Patrol is coming to the rescue.

Murray, Allison. Little Mouse.  Disney-Hyperion.  ISBN 978-1423143307.  $16.99.  Ages 2-5. Mommy says I’m her little mouse, but I can be so many other animals as well. Let me show you how.

Pizzoli, Greg.  The Watermelon Seed.  Disney-Hyperion.  ISBN 978-1423171010.  $16.99.  Ages 2-5.  Crocodile accidentally swallows a watermelon seed!  Will a watermelon grow in his stomach?

Rocco, John.  Super Hair-O and the Barber of Doom. Disney-Hyperion.  ISBN 978-1423121893. $16.99. Ages 4-8. All superheroes get their powers from somewhere.  The more Super Hair-O's hair grows the more awesome his superpowers become, until he is taken to the villain's lair, and his superpowers are at risk of disappearing.  

Sauer, Tammi. Nugget & Fang: Friends Forever -- or Snack Time?  Illustrated by Michael Slack. Harcourt. IBN 978-0547852850. $16.99.  Ages 4-8. In the deep, deep ocean lived two best friends.  Nugget and Fang did everything together, and life was perfect until Nugget went to school and learned that sharks and fish can't be friends.  

Shannon, George. Turkey Tot.  Illustrated by Jennifer K. Mann.  Holiday House. ISBN 978-0823423798.  $16.95.  Ages 4-7.  Turkey Tot wants blackberries but they’re out of reach.  What inventive idea will he come up with to get the berries, despite his nay-saying friends?

Slonim, David. Patch.  Roaring Brook.  ISBN 978-1596436435. $15.99.  Ages 3-8. Patch is a good dog, most of the time. No matter what he does, however, he's always loveable.

Thong, Roseanne Greenfield. Round is a Tortilla: A Book of Shapes. Illustrated by John Parra.  Chronicle.  ISBN 978-1452106168.  $16.99.  Ages 2-5.  Our world is full of shapes. Find circles, squares, rectangles and other shapes in this book and then look in your own neighborhood.

Vestergaard, Hope.  Digger Dozer Dumper.  Illustrated by David Slonim.  Candlewick.  ISBN 978-0763650780. $15.99.  Ages 3-8.  Big trucks have big fun doing their jobs, but all have different personalities. Which truck would you like to be? 

Young, Jessica.  My Blue Is Happy.  Illustrated by Catia Chien.  Candlewick.  ISBN 978-0763651251.  $15.99.  Ages 4-8.   My friend says pink is pretty like a ballerina’s tutu, but I think pink is annoying—like an itchy bug bite. What colors make you happy?
