Outlying Member Support - Apply Now!
Apply now for one of ten (10) $100 stipends for members living and working in outlying areas of District 8! Stipends cover registration and mileage to/from conference (up to a total of $100.00). To qualify, the distance between the conference venue (University of Houston-Main) and your place of employment must be at least 50 miles. To apply, complete the funding application (http://www.txla.org/groups/D8-docs) and submit it to Lee Andrew Hilyer (lahilyer@uh.edu), D8 Chair, by Monday, October 10th, 2011 at 5pm. If more than ten applications are received, stipend recipients will be determined by random drawing.

The closest parking lot to the library is Lot 1E (See campus parking map, section D-6). Accessible parking spaces for the disabled are available in Lot 1B (adjacent to 1E). Both lots are accessible from University Entrance 1.
Parking Garages are also available for a nominal fee. Entrance to the Welcome Center Garage is off of Calhoun St. Entrance to the UH Hilton Parking Garage is accessible from University Entrance 1. There is an additional parking garage accessible from Spur 5.
NOTE: October 22nd is also the day of the UH Homecoming game. Attendees should use the parking options above on the East side of campus. If there is an attendant at Lot 1E, let them know you are attending the TLA District 8 conference. We recommend you arrive no later than 9:30am to ensure a close parking spot.

Presenter: Jackie Cundiff, Clear Lake City-County, Freeman Branch Library
This session will focus on what a program partner is, what your library has to offer program partners, and who can be a program partner for your library. Jackie will discuss the current partners of the Freeman Branch library, and explain how anyone can replicate their success.

Meta-Active Learning: Library Instruction Techniques Made Simple
Presenter: Shawn Vaillancourt & Loretta Wallace, University of Houston Libraries
Active learning is a key way to give students ownership over their own development of knowledge. In this session, participants will work in groups to learn about some active learning techniques they can easily integrate into their library instruction. These techniques are designed for the novice who is unsure where to start with respect to making their learning environments more active. This will be an interactive session.

eReader Technology: A Hands-On Approach to Using It for Your Library
Presenter: Angela Colmenares, Lone Star College (LSC – Montgomery Library)
Wondering which eReader technology to invest your library's time and money in? This session will bring you up to date on the latest eReader technology and show you how to use these devices to checkout ebooks from public and academic libraries. Hands-on time is included for top eReader devices such as Amazon's Kindle and Barnes and Noble's Color Nook, as well as popular eReader apps for the iPad2. Discussions will also include using eReader technology to promote your library and common circulation policies for eReader technology.

Using Wikispaces to Share Reference and Circulation Statistics
Presenter: Shanté Clark-Davis and Patrina Epperson, Texas Southern University (Thurgood Marshall School of Law Library)
Librarians and Library staff benefit from utilizing Wikispaces to record reference and circulation desk statistics. More importantly, Wikispaces creates a medium for all librarians to record the types of questions being asked as well as the answers patrons are provided. This session will empower librarians and library staff to begin utilizing Wikispaces as a collaborative tool to ensure that librarians and library staff are recording, digitizing, and sharing reference and circulation statistics.

The Latest eBook Library Trends
Presenters: Mike Saperstein and Linda Stevens, Harris County Public Library
The future is now with regard to planning, building and marketing robust digital collections in all types of libraries. How are different publisher decisions affecting library eBook pricing? How do we offer cutting-edge technological support with minimal staffing? How do we keep the library connected to the customer when a service is offered virtually? This session will review the latest trends in the library eBook world and start a conversation to encourage library planning to meet current and future demands.
Strategic Collaboration to Expand the Library’s Impact
Presenter: Irene Ke, University of Houston Libraries
Partnering with faculty and staff outside the library is an effective way to reach out to potential users who may not be familiar with library services. However, how can we get faculty and staff to work with us effectively? With limited resources and time, how can we maximize our level of impact on campus when working collaboratively with members outside the library? Based on her years’ of experience in collaborating with staff and faculty members on campus, the presenter will share her observations, ideas and tips on how librarians can work creatively and strategically with members outside the library.

Citations Gone Awry: Assessing Information Literacy Skills of Intensive English Students
Presenter: Andrea Malone, University of Houston Libraries
International students are a large and vital part of any university and many of them struggle with the academic culture and have difficulty understanding and acquiring adequate information literacy skills. International students studying intensive English (IE) are at an even larger disadvantage because the primary goal of their program is to learn academic English. This presentation will introduce a project designed to teach upper level IE students fundamental information literacy skills, to evaluate their skill level in research papers using an assessment rubric, and to make suggestions to the IE faculty about how further collaboration might ensure increased success of their students once they enter into study at the university.

Capstone Digital Provides a Variety of Reading Solutions
Presenter: Norm Berning, Capstone Digital
In recent years, Capstone has become the leading publisher of high-interest books for children and young adults. The Capstone collection is now more than more than 15,000 titles of non-fiction, fiction, and graphic fiction. At the present time, more than 2000 of these titles are available in various exciting, interactive, digital formats. The Capstone Digital programs include state-of-the-art eBooks and Databases for Pre-K through early High School levels. This session will provide an overview of these programs and give media specialists/educators an opportunity to test the programs with young learners. Digital reading and learning activities provide contemporary learners with Solutions!
