MINUTES OF REFERENCE ROUND TABLE
March 17, 1967
The Reference Round Table officers, ALA officers and
invited guests met in the Executive Room of the Texas Hotel,
Fort Worth at 7:30 a.m. Eighteen people attended. The
questions to be discussed had been distributed before the
meeting. These discussion questions were prepared by
Edward Strable, Executive Secretary of the Reference Service
Division of ALA and Walter Allen of Dayton Ohio Public
Library. A copy is attached.
Following the speaker and the business session, the
original group was joined in a called session by those who
desired to remain.
The following proposal was presented to the group by
Richard Waters of the Dallas Public Library and seconded
by Sara Aull of the University of Houston.
- That the chairman appoint one person from each of the
ten Major Resource Center areas to act as coordinator
for that MRC area with regard to reference-information
resources and cooperative practices.
- That these ten representatives in turn draw on
representatives from the various types of libraries
in each area..
- That the ten representatives may or may not be members
of the RRT, but the work will be coordinated by the
chairman of RRT.
- That these ten representatives take a sampling from
all the types and sizes of ibraries in each MRC area
in order to determine needs, problems, etc., which
need attention.
- That from this sampling semi-formal proposals be made
by the chairman to the Executive Board of the TLA for
a state-wide meeting or institute which would utilize
federal funds, if applicable.
- That an attempt be made to have this meeting prior to
the 1968 TLA Conference.
- That this group also accept the responsibility of
identifying and publicizing cooperative ventures now
in effect within each geographic area.
There was no opposition and the motion carried.

QUESTIONS FOR TEXAS MEETING
1. What sort of resources does the Texas affiliate have?
(In terms of people and money)
2. What is the nature of the relationship of the round table with T.L.A.?
3. Why was the Reference R.T. formed in the first place?
4. What goals has the leadership (or others) in the R.T. begun to think about?
5. What can be accomplished, in terms of the available resources (people and
money), time, and distances?
6. Do you have projects in mind? Or, are you satisfied with just having
an annual program?
7. If projects, what kinds do you have in mind? Institutes? Re-printing?
Union Lists? Training sessions?
8. Can any of these projects be funded from existing funds? Are there
foundations which might be willing to help?
9. Are there cooperative projects which could be accomplished?
10. Can any be done through the existing regions of T.L.A.
11. How does the group fit into plans for statewide library development?
Can it help in identifying needs or in meeting some of them?
