Activity One - Agrimony to Yew: Herbal Flashcards & Plant Poetry

Teach students how to identify healing herbs as well as memorize specific herb’s healing properties. Once teens are familiar with the herbs and their uses have them select one plant about which to write a poem.

Program Description

Using flashcards, familiarize students with herbs and their medical properties. Once students begin to recognize specific herbs assign (or let students choose) an herb to write a shape poem about. The physical shape of the poem should convey the physical aspect of the herb while the text of the poem describes the medical properties and/or uses of the selected herb. (See example-coming soon)

  • An additional source for flashcards, pictures and herbal information is Organic Heirloom Plants. The images at this site are copyrighted but you can use the site for research and if you want the flash cards they can be downloaded and printed.
  • McCormick has little information cards on at least 12 of their spices which have antioxdant properties free in the grocery store's spice aisle. Although they do not picture the plant, they do offer amounts and ways to use the spice and compare the spice to other antioxidants such as blueberries. This could help add a little spice to your program.

Activity Two - Planting the Seed: Language and Plants

Many words in the English language have their roots in Latin and Greek. This activity is designed to help students begin to recognize Latin and Greek roots in everyday English words. Once students begin to recognize these roots they can break down unfamiliar words and begin to infer meaning without knowing the exact definition.

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Using flashcards from Activity One, teach students ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍the Latin names for certain herbs. Discuss the breakdown of the plant names and how Latin is the base for all Romance Languages. (i.e. What is a Romance Language? Why was Latin adopted into so many languages? Why was Latin adopted into so many English words if English is not a Romance Language?) Discuss how many English words are also based in Latin. Provide students with a list of Latin-based English words and a Latin-English Dictionary [the Latin sections of the words have been underlined]. (See List A) Have students determine definition of English word based on the Latin meaning of the base word.

Activity Three - Your Memory Nose: Smell and Memory

Smell is one of the most important senses of the human body when it comes to memory. During this activity, students will discuss smell, memory and the science behind the association.

Program Description

When a human inhales, scent molecules stimulate the olfactory receptors in the nasal passage. These receptors send the smell to the olfactory bulb, a small structure located at the front of the forebrain in mammals which then processes information about the odor. The forebrain is where the brain's limbic system is located. The limbic system includes the hippocampus, amygdala, septum, and limbic cortex which support a variety of functions including emotion, behavior, long-term memory, and olfaction. Because the olfactory bulb is located so close to the limbic system scent often triggers memory. Once the science of scent and memory has been thoroughly discussed have students take turns smelling the different items you provide. Have the students to write a three-page paper recounting a memory associated with‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍one of the smells provided.

Activity Four – Getting Scientific With It!

The activities below are suggestions for bringing elements of Texas Gothic into the science classroom.

Chemistry - Break it Down

Discuss chemical breakdown of "healing herbs" and how the chemicals of certain plants impact human physiology. (i.e. Why does Witch Hazel work to clean wounds? How does Belladonna affect the brain? )

Botany - Part & Parcel: Plants as Puzzles

Teach the different parts of plants then have students apply their knowledge to herbs. Herbs are used in different ways; discuss different techniques for drying and distilling, herbs to use in alternative medicine. Using flashcards from activity one and have students identify which parts of specific herbs are used in herbalism.

Activity 5 - Archeology: Dig In

Archeology is the study of material remains of past human life. By studying artifacts left by people who have lived in previous times, archaeologists have discovered what life was like in Ancient Egypt, Medieval Europe, Colonial America and more. This activity provides a fun, interactive way for students to learn the basics about the science of archeology.

  • Plastic kiddy pool (several depending on size of class)
  • 2-4 Clay Pots (broken)
  • Selection of Small Toys & Other Items to Hide in the Pool(s)
  • 3 Types of Soil (enough to put a layer of each in every pool)
  • Plastic Shovels
  • Paint Brushes

Program Description

Begin this activity by discussing archeology. What is archeology? Why is it important? How does one excavate a site? You can even have an archeologist from a local college come in and share his/her experiences as a professional archeologist.

Preparation:

Fill pool 1/3 full will first type of soil placing small items at different levels within the soil. Do this two more times with the other two types of soil. When completed, you should have a pool filled with layered soil with items hidden throughout.

Instructions:

Separate students into teams and give each of them a section of the pool to "excavate". When they have completed the excavation and have found all of the "artifacts" of their section have them write a report on the excavation. What did they learn about the people who left those items behind?

Activity 6 - Make It Your Mission: History of Spanish Missions in Texas

Spain and it's conquistadors played a major role in the settling of Texas by Europeans. One of Spain's missions was to convert the Native populace to Christianity. To this end, Spain and the Catholic church built many missions throughout Texas. This activity is to help students learn about these Missions and their place in Texas history.

Directions:

Assign students to write a 3 page research paper on a specific Texas mission.

Activity 7 - English Writing Prompts

These prompts are designed to allow teachers to use Texas Gothic in the classroom while teaching core skills for literary analysis and composition.

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Activity 1: Bath Teas

In this craft, teens will use a selection of dried herbs to create bath teas. These are perfect for Mother's Day, Teacher or holiday gifts. Experiment with different scents to achieve different effects.

List of Supplies

  • Large sealing tea bags
  • Dried Lavender*
  • Dried Rose Petals*
  • Dried Peppermint*
  • Dried Sage*
  • Large Bowls (one for each dried herb)
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Spoons
  • Iron/Hair Iron

*These herbs are just suggestions; you can choose to provide any dried herbs that you choose. Check several of the Bath Tea Recipes in the books listed above or the links listed below.

Program Description:

Have teens smell each herb to see which base they like then begin mixing the teas.

Directions:

Scoop several tablespoons of desired herbs into a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly. When herbs are well-blended scoop herbs into large tea bag until tea bag is ⅔ full. Using iron (or hair iron*) press the open ends of the tea bag shut. The ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍heat‍‍‍‍‍‍‍t‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ will seal the tea bag. To use bath teas simply place the sealed tea bag in a tub of hot running water and let steep for several minutes. *I have found using a hair iron to seal the bags is much easier and more efficient.

Activity 2: Ghost Hunting 101

This program is designed to introduce teens to the science behind paranormal investigation. Teens will learn what types of equipment are used by 'Ghost Hunters' and how to identify a picture that has been altered.

  • Adobe Photoshop/‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍GIMP [free] ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍(or some photo editing software)
  • iPad
  • Photo Printer

Program Description

Contact a local "paranormal investigators" group and invite them to present at the library. Most of these groups are more than happy to share their knowledge and will visit libraries for no cost. The Investigators will bring their equipment, discuss how it is used and share some of their own 'ghost hunting' experiences.

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍The next part of this program teaches teens how to manipulate images. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍By learning to add 'ghosts' to a picture, teens also learn how to recognize altered 'paranormal' photographs.
Instructions: Have teens take pictures of each other than load the image on computers. Use the layers feature of photo editing software to layer two or more pictures then manipulate images until the second image looks "ghostly". Print images for teens to take home.

If you do not have access to digital photo editing software there are apps for both iPhone/iPad and Android devices that allow the user to add a "ghost" to an image.

Activity 3: Dig In! at the Library

Activity 4: Local Legends

This program relates local history to popular urban legends.

Program Description

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Contact local history groups to see if they would ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍be willing to share some of the local legends of your area. Follow this presentation with a discussion of Urban Legends and why they are so popular. Have teens write down any local legends they have heard and then, later, type up and bind into a book for your library's local history collection.

Local newspaper archives could also be a source for such stories.

Activity 5: Herbalism & Healing

This program introduces teens to the idea of alternate medicine and the use of herbs to maintain health.

List of Supplies

  • Cuttings/small samples of the following plants: aloe, rosemary, lavender, chamomile, witch hazel, and peppermint
  • Dried samples of those same plants
  • Cups or Mugs
  • Tea Kettle
  • Peppermint and/or Chamomile Tea (you can find these in the tea aisle at the supermarket)
  • Paper plates

Program Description

Have a ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍local herbalist‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ come in to discuss using plants in medicine. Following this presentation, teens will experiment with several herbs and sample a couple herbal teas.

Instructions:

Place plants out on plates for teens to touch and smell and allow them to taste the plants that are edible. Do the same for the dried herbs. Discuss the healing properties of each herb (see below), allowing teens to feel and smell each plant. You can also discuss the history of each plant (see books below for history of each plant). Have teens brew Chamomile and/or Peppermint Tea and let them taste.

  • Aloe - Properties: anti-inflammatory, emollient, vulnerary & purgative properties. External Use Treats: most common modern use is for treating minor scrapes, insect bites and mild sunburn. WARNING: Do not ingest unless under direction of medical professional.
  • Rosemary - Properties: antibacterial, antidepressant, antifungal, antioxidant, pain-relieving, leaves contain oil used to stimulate circulatory system. Internal Use Treats: colds, coughs, fatigue, headache, indigestions & stress. External Use Treats: Arthritis & rheumatic pain, dandruff, minor wounds, muscle pain and sprains. WARNING: Do not ingest if pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
  • Lavender - Properties: strongly antiseptic and antibacterial, aromatic. Internal Use Treats: headache, stress, insomnia, indigestion, and nausea. External Use (Lavender Oil) Treats: treats minor burns, infections, acne, fungi and ringworm.
  • Chamomile - Properties: antibacterial, antispasmodic, pain-releaving, tonic properties. Internal Uses Treat: bladder ailments, gass, insomnia, relieve pain, ulcers. External Uses Treat: arthritic pain, burns, hemorrhoids, minor cuts, sunburn and varicose veins. NOTE: There are two types of Chamomile (German & Roman) German Chamomile makes the better tasting tea, but Roman Chamomile is more aromatic.
  • Witch Hazel - Properties: anti-inflammatory, astringent, sedative, tonic. Internal Uses Treat: None. External Use Treats: (used in liquid or oil form) bleeding, bruises, hemorrhoids, insect bites, minor burns, muscle aches and sprains, aftershave lotion, cosmetic astringent and skin cleanser. WARNING: For external use only.
  • Peppermint - Properties: digestive aid, sinus congestion aid. Internal Uses Treat: stomach cramps, nausea, digestion, relaxes digestive and stomach muscles. External Uses Treat: Respiratory ailments, coughs, sinus congestion. WARNING: Never ingest pure peppermint oil as it is very toxic.

Activity 1: Blog Your Ghost Story

Program Description

Create a blog dedicated to collecting spooky stories from your teens. Begin by sharing your own "otherworldly" experience then allowing teens to share their stories through comments.

Activity 2: Haunted Bulletin Board

List of Supplies

  • Die Cut Ghosts
  • Pens/Pencils

Program Description

You can also share ghost stories non-digitally with small sheets of paper and a bulletin board. Decorate a bulletin board with a creepy haunted house and leave die cut ghosts for teens to write their stories on. Teens can write down their stories on the ghosts and post to the bulletin board to share with their peers.

Activity 3: Alternative Medicine Display

Program Description

Gather books on herbalism, acupuncture and other "alternative" methods of healing to display in your library. Look for titles on Herbalism, Acupuncture, Massage and Organic Living and place them in a prominent place in your library. Additionally, you could put little satchels of herbs around the books as olfactory feature of the display.
