MINUTES

APRIL 2, 1998

 

1.      Call to order - 8:00 am

  1. Welcome - Connie Moss (Dallas Public Library)
  2. Introductions and sign-in - all attendees

 

Officers present: Chair - Connie Moss; Councilor - Nancy Buchanan; Councilor Alt. - Roy Lewis; Conference Program Liaison - Red Wassenich; Secretary/Treasurer - Jeanette Mosey.

 

Others present: Judith Hiott, Donna Short, Bennett Ponsford, Vickie Phillips, Judy McCoy, Stephen Haynes, Carol Kahn Thomas, Douglas Manning, Shelly Leader, Peggy Martin, Christy Milliot, Robert Boyer, Lisa Marie Loranc, Mary Perroni, Jennifer Acker, Sharon Castleberry.

 

2.      Approval of minutes from last meeting 

 

Jeanette Mosey moved acceptance of the minutes as distributed.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

3.      Secretary/Treasurer's report - Jeanette Mosey (Austin Community College)

 

Jeanette reported a balance of $3,840.32 as of the January 1998 statement.  This does not include income from this conference - the security preconference or New Technology Showcase.

 

4.      Councilor's Report - Nancy Buchanan (University of Houston)

 

Nancy reported on Council I and noted one upcoming resolution on changing the TALL Texans Interest Group to a Round Table.

 

Roy Lewis (NETLS), Councilor Alt., described fund-raising efforts during the conference for the Elizabeth Crabb fund.

 

 

5.      TLA Executive Board report

 

In Gleniece Robinson's absence, Nancy Buchanan reported on current Executive Board activities: strategic plan, centennial committee, media campaign - Read for Your Life, and new ad hoc groups on public library standards, bluebonnet [award?] and libraries & museums.

 

6.      Unfinished Business

  1. Conference report

1)                 Preconference - Connie reported that there were 91 advance registrants; it was co-sponsored by the Texas State Library; and we expect to net about $400.

2)                 Net Fair - Connie reported for Joyce Baumbach (absent due to problems with the room setup) by reviewing the sessions scheduled for today and tomorrow.

3)                 New Technology Showcase - Vickie Phillips (HALS)& Judith Hiott (Houston Public Library) announced that they worked with vendors to fill all the slots except Friday at 9:00 am.  After discussion of the vendor invitation process, the group decided that the TPALS directory should be the source list for contacting vendors about demos at future conferences.  Judith requested volunteers for three remaining slots and received offers from three members.

 

  1. TLA Stipend - Connie introduced Peggy Martin (Moore Memorial Library, Texas City) who was awarded the stipend to attend TLA this year.  Peggy is volunteering at the New Technology Showcase and at Netfair.

 

  1. Election results - Connie announced that Sharon Castleberry (Carrollton Public Library) was elected Vice Chair/Chair Elect and that Donna Short (Denton High School Library) was elected Secretary/Treasurer.

 

  1. TALL Texan Leadership Institute 1998 - Connie reported that six A&TRT members have been selected for the institute.  Past support from A&TRT has been $500 per member attending or a minimum of $500 if no A&TRT members were selected.  During Annual Assembly, the chair was given discretion to continue funding at that level.  Connie reported that, as Chair, she was limiting support to up to a maximum of $1500 to TALL Texans in 1998.

 

  1. Strategic Plan - Connie reported on the three areas included from A&TRT:  programming, use of technology, and general TLA support.

 

1)                 programming - preconference, Net Fair, New Technology Showcase

2)                 use of technology - Web page and email list have not been implemented

3)                 general TLA support - TALL Texans, Legislative Day, special technology issues

 

  1. Connie expressed her appreciation to

 

Judith Hiott and Vickie Phillips for their work on the New Technology Showcase;

Joyce Baumbach (Plano Public Library) for putting together Net Fair; Kathy Metz Edwards, Roy Lewis, and Martha Knott (Alamo Area Library System) for their work on the newsletter, coming up with a slate of officers, and helping with the stipend process; Chris Peterson and the Texas State Library for co-sponsorship of the preconference; and to Kahn-Thomas, Inc., independent distributors of Athena products, for sponsoring the breakfast.

 

7.      New Business

 

  1. Red Wassenich (Austin Community College), liaison from the Conference Program Planning Committee, reported that the theme for the 1999 TLA conference is "Libraries Linking Centuries."  This will be described further at the new officers meeting and at assembly (July 10-12).  All programs are to be completely planned two weeks before Halloween.

 

8.      Announcements

 

  1. Robert Boyer (Garland Public Library) announced that they are testing the enhanced, enriched BISAC.

 

  1. Doug Manning introduced himself as the new Executive Board Liaison to the A&TRT.

 

9.      Adjournment

 

  1. Shelly Leader (Helen Hall Library, League City) moved for adjournment.  There was a second; the motion passed.  The meeting adjourned at 8:50 am.
