April 25, 2002

TLA Annual Conference - San Antonio


In attendance were: Chair Jennifer Acker, Councilor Sharon Castleberry, Councilor-Alternate Jeanette Mosey, Marilyn Johnson, Vickie Phillips, Secretary/Treasurer Jerry McCulley, Sheila Williams, Jeff Coyle, David Schuster, Weber Baker, Deborah Hall, Maribel Castro, Myra Ponville, Christy Milliot, Richard Wayne, Roy Lewis, Marilyn Johnson, Eileen Day. 

Meeting was called to order by Chair Jennifer Acker who asked that everyone introduce themselves. 

Sharon Castlebury gave her report.   She announced that conference pre-registration was the highest ever; that Eva Poole is the new Chair-Elect for TLA; and that the TLA dues increased was passed overwhelmingly. 

Secretary/Treasurer Jerry McCulley read the minutes from March 30, 2001.  Councilor-Alternate Mosey suggested corrections to the minutes.  Roy Lewis made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction.  Weber Baker seconded the motion.  The minutes were passed unanimously. 

McCulley read the Treasurer’s report.  Castleberry asked about stipends.  Acker told the group that stipends were not awarded because no one expressed an interest in them this year.  Castleberry also asked about the donation to the Tall Texans Leadership Conference.  ATRT should be making $250 contributions per year to this conference. 

Acker asked about making some changes to Technology Showcase, including having only one room, but making it available all three days of the conference.  The discussion was tabled until Annual Assembly.  Acker also updated the group on the preconference.  According to Chair-Elect Peterson, the Round Table should make a little money on the preconferences. 

Jill Emory, the program planning liaison, announced next year’s theme as “Libraries…Freedom in Action.”  Bob Cringley will be one of the main speakers for the Conference. 

Ideas for programming for next year’s conference were discussed.  Suggested topics included:  marketing best practice and success stories, gadgets galore, using technology to market the library, “how to” basics (particularly for directors who may be the only person from a library who can attend conference), addressing needs of libraries moving from text to web, streaming video, virtual reference, use of PDAs (printing, beaming, lending, maintaining, applications, etc.), Microsoft Ebook (due out in 2002), off-site kiosks, content management, XP training (system management), Library of Texas and how it will affect smaller libraries, developing content to for distance education/video conferencing.  

Roy Lewis made an announcement regarding the Texas State Library databases, asking that everyone be sure to promote the databases and how important they are, and how much they are worth.

A motion to adjourn was brought by Sharon Castleberry, seconded by Jerry McCulley and approved.  The ATRT adjourned at 9:00 am April 25, 2002.
