LISTSERV

Welcome to the Black Caucus, TLA listserv! A listserv can be a fun, entertaining, and informative way to convey messages to your fellow Caucus members.

The Caucus Listserv is an electronic forum provided for subscribers to debate or discuss issues relevant to the Black Caucus, TLA. The purpose of the this list is to increase communications between Black Caucus members. A list serve is essentially an extension of Caucus face-to-face meetings, where members can ask each other for advice on and discuss issues. We encourage all Caucus members to post requests for information, as well as helpful information related to librarianship in general.

Once a member posts a message to the listserv [by sending it to blackcaucus@txla.org], it is automatically forwarded to all the other members.

The listserv was created May 11, 2002 from the TLA Black Caucus Membership list. If your email address is not listed in the directory or if your email address has changed, please subscribe now.

New email addresses are always welcomed. You can be added by subscribing to the listserv as outlined below.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE

LISTSERV GUIDELINES
Members are requested to abide by the following guidelines when using the listserve. The list will be updated and edited as needed.

  • any message posted to the listserve is sent to ALL members. Therefore, personal messages directed toward one person or a few people are not allowed.
  • responses to listserve messages will go to ALL members. Make sure it is your intent that your response go to the entire listserve.
  • pay close attention to what you say -- it defines who you are online. Be clear in what you ask. Ambiguous or vague questions often lead to no response at all. Give as much essential information as you feel is necessary for people to respond to your question.
  • sending chain letters is not permitted.
  • the listserve should serve as a vehicle for exchanging ideas, seeking help with problems, disseminating information, responding to help requests, and other queries relevant to Black Caucus business.
  • inappropriate language WILL NOT be tolerated.
  • resist the temptation to "flame" others on the list. Remember that these discussions are public and meant for constructive exchanges. Treat other list members as you would want them to treat you.
  • when posting a message to the list, please remember to include your name, and optionally, your institution name at the end of your message.
  • when replying to a message, only include the parts of the previous message which are pertinent to your point or comment. When possible, delete the header information form the previous message, or any other non-essential text. This will make the message more readable for others and help reduce the time it takes to download.
  • when replying to the question, try to include the the original question. It is not uncommon for someone to pose a question such as "How many people are using Innovative Interfaces?" only to have 10 other people post a simple "I am!" response. This makes for confusing reading to others who have not followed the conversation closely.
  • the "subject" line is one of the most important features of any electronic message. This is what first attracts a reader to your message. Never leave the subject line blank.
  • the case [upper or lower] you use can indicate how you are trying to speak. Netiquette dictates that if you USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, people will assume you are shouting. Write as you would in a normal letter, following traditional rules of grammar.
