TLA Conference Meeting
Friday, July 11, 2003
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Austin, Texas
Committee Members Present:
Mary Christmas (Chair), Chair; Ron Pollock (Vice Chair), Diantha Dawkins,
Dolores Greenwald, James Karney, Denise Landry-Hyde, Ted Wanner.
Guests:
Linda Alexander, Holly Blaylock, Naomi Dominguez, Dale Fleeger, Christine
Peterson, Dana Rooks (Executive Board Liaison), Steve Seale, Angela Skaggs, and
Martha Tarlton.
The chair called the meeting to order at approximately 10:00am. She welcomed
the group, reviewed the charge, and held introductions of those present.
Ron Pollock made the motion, with Dolores Greenwald seconding, that the
minutes from Annual Conference be approved as corrected. The motion passed.
Chair Mary Christmas discussed the committee's financial report.
Christine Peterson will be updating the committee's web site. To simplify
updating, committee members will only be listed on the site, but contact
information can still be obtained via the TLA "Members Only" site. A draft of
the Annual Assembly minutes will be posted as well as information on the
preconference, when available. There was discussion about the possibility of
preparing links to continuing development opportunities, but it was agreed that
a link to the existing CE calendar would suffice.
Ron Pollock distributed a printout of a PowerPoint presentation he created
summarizing results of the 2003 conference survey. It is available at
http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/~careers/2003survey/2003_survey.html.
The results are broken down by type of library and include rankings of possible
topical themes for the next conference. It is important that division chairs and
others in TLA leadership positions have access to this information. The
following steps were agreed upon to encourage completion and use of information
from the surveys:
- Ron and Mary will work on an article for TLACast.
- Customized results from the survey will be sent to each division chair.
- The committee should send a representative to each unit at annual
conference to encourage completion of the surveys.
- Usage of the results should be promoted at the new officer training
session at Annual conference.
- Information should be disseminated at the Annual Assembly Council Caucus.
Mary Christmas will contact Bonnie Case to request that the Annual Conference
registration forms for next conference specify type of library. This will allow
the committee in the future to determine the range of participation in
completing the forms for librarians from various types of libraries.
Dana Rooks make the following announcements:
- Members have through Friday evening to comment on the revised TLA
Strategic Plan.
- She encouraged attendance and participation at the Friday evening task
force sessions.
- TLA units are encouraged to consider making donations to the Legislative
Reserve Fund.
- TLA is currently lacking e-mail addresses for approximately one-half of
its membership! This thwarts efforts to encourage electronic dissemination of
information. Check to make sure your current e-mail is on file.
- Units should assist in identifying potential TALL Texans nominees.
Mary Christmas reviewed the 2003/2004 budget request from the committee.
Steve Seale presented an idea for a half-day preconference on graphic novels,
with an emphasis on their use to promote reader motivation and literacy. Dr.
Robin Hill from California is willing to serve as the main presenter for
expenses only. Steve has also found some interest from publishers willing to
participate in the preconference. TASL has expressed willingness to cosponsor
the preconference, and CRT, YART, and PLD are also interested. The CE Providers
Interest Group is willing to underwrite expenses not covered through
registration. The Continuing Education and Development Committee agreed to serve
as a sponsor for this preconference.
Mary Christmas encouraged everyone to check, and update if necessary, their
information in the TLA Members Only site. Committee e-mails should be sent to
the listserv conteduc@txla.org. She also
encouraged nominations from the group for TALL Texans.
Denise Landry-Hyde volunteered to help with the article on the conference
survey.
The meeting adjourned at 11:50am.
Respectfully submitted,
Martha Tarlton
