Academic Scholarship Award

Purpose

The College and University Libraries Division (CULD), a division of the Texas Library Association, wants to encourage persons to become Academic Librarians and also wishes to encourage membership and participation in TLA and CULD. To carry out this objective, CULD annually offers an academic scholarship of $1000.

Who May Apply

Anyone who is enrolled as a graduate student at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program and has completed at least 3 credit hours/1 semester at the time of applying, is a student member of TLA (costs $25 annually), and plans to focus on a career as an Academic Librarian in a college or university setting.

Use of Scholarship

Funds from the scholarship may be applied to expenses associated with a full or part time graduate librarianship program, including, but not limited to, tuition, textbooks, housing, or travel to course site.

Guidelines

Applications will be evaluated by the following criteria.

  1. Demonstrates commitment to academic librarianship in a college or university setting. (Example: volunteer work in a library, encouragement of students’ library usage, selection of courses being taken, attendance at targeted academic library workshops or programs, indication from letter of recommendation.)
  2. Demonstrates good written communications skills. (Example: evaluation of application)
  3. Applicant’s likelihood of continued involvement with TLA and CULD. (Example: career goals, level of past involvement in organizations, indications from a personal statement, and/or letters of recommendation)
  4. Demonstrated success and progress in pursuit of the library school degree (Example: through grades or recommendation letters)
  5. Financial Need (Example: limited other funding sources for degree program)

SCHEDULE

Application form is available through TLA and CULD web sites and Texas institutions granting ALA-accredited Master’s degrees in librarianship. Application deadline: February 15, 2008.

Announcement of scholarship recipients: Before the TLA Conference in April, 2008.
