Newsletter Fall 2003

Notes from the Chair
By Melody Kelly

Are you familiar with the AskColorado initiative?  It's mentioned on page 5 in the September 15, 2003, Library Hotline.

“A collaborative virtual reference service was launched on Sept. 2, 3003. Library staff throughout the state have been working for more than a year to make the vision of 24/7 online library reference service a reality.  So far, 43 public, academic, school and special libraries are involved in the project with a goal of answering over 10,000 questions in the first year.  The project plans to put its logo and link on every library homepage in the state for easy access by all citizens.  The project's web site is www.askcolorado.org   Access is also available thru www.aclin.org .”

The TLA Program Committee is working to bring one of the Ask Colorado project leaders to the San Antonio Conference and the TLA Executive Board has approached TSLAC to discuss how libraries throughout the state can collaborate to create an AskTexas project.  If such a project became a reality, perhaps we could more easily demonstrate to our Legislators the value of library services to education as well as our collaborative efforts to keep and use a core of TexShare databases to benefit the citizens of Texas.

Visit the AskColorado site and post your ideas to our CULD Discussion List in the Members Only Section of the TLA Web Site.

Have you visited the Members Only Section of the TLA Web Site?  New features continue to be added.  “Member Distribution Lists” now enables us to post messages to the CULD Discussion Lists without adding messages to our own email out/in boxes.  Make checking this area a regular part of your weekly activities.

“Member Search” (the online version of the TLA Directory) allows us to search for members of committees, districts, divisions and many other combinations.  It’s a great way to create our own special lists of TLA colleagues – and with “Modify Membership Information/Choices” we can update our own information as needed to stay in touch when we change email addresses or jobs.

Our Nominating Committee is beginning its work.  Please contact Karen Wielhorski at wielhorski@cl.uh.edu if you would like to recommend someone to the Committee.
