Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 5:00-5:30 p.m.
Dallas Convention Center, Dallas, Texas

Attendance: Linda Bixler, Janice Lange, Fran Cotton, Bobbie D. Long, Jan Kemp, Angel Rivera, Mary J. McCoy, Rita Castro, Virginia Allen, Elizabeth Barksdale, Marilyn Greene, Catherine Essinger, Molly Dahlstrom, Joe Dahlstrom

  1. Chair’s Report
Linda Bixler thanked TLA for distributing a brochure listing academic programs at conference, saying it would encourage more academic librarians to attend conference. She urged members to encourage TLA to produce the brochure again next year.

Linda gave an overview of CULD accomplishments this year. CULD collaborated with other units to sponsor a preconference and six conference programs. The CULD scholarship was awarded to Shannon Martinez. Kim Wiley led a drive to advocate for new members, which resulted in a $4,000 increase in income from new members. Linda urged member to encourage others to participate in CULD since we get more things done if we work together as a group and collaborate with other librarians.

  2. Vice Chair’s Report
Janice Lange described plans for the 2009 Conference. We are looking for programs that emphasize the user’s experience. We hope to invite October Ivans to speak about changes in publishing and the impact on academic libraries. Other topics proposed for programs include assessment, producing a successful QEP, revisiting the progress and new finding from the Digital Natives project, how the LibQual and ClimQual surveys can help libraries assess the overall climate of the library to better serve students.

  3. Legislative Report
Joe Dahlstrom gave an overview of the TLA legislative agenda. It will include support for TexShare to head off cuts in funding, to advocate for an expansion, and to discuss the possibility of expanding TexShare to hospital libraries. We will also seek to cleanup language in the law that grants a purchasing exemption for serials to community college libraries under TEA guidelines. The language currently has confusing language that makes it hard to community colleges to bid out for serials.

  4. Scholarship Report
Bobby Long noted that new rules for the scholarship resulted in a phenomenal pool of scholarship candidates this year. She also praised last year’s recipient, Kelly Wilder.
