College & University Libraries Division
Notes from the Chair… CULD is sponsoring a number of exciting programs for academic librarians at the upcoming TLA Conference to be held March 28 - 31 in San Antonio. The list begins Wednesday, March 28 with a preconference on measuring and assessing service quality, presented by Fred Heath, Colleen Cook, and Bruce Thompson of Texas A & M University. On Thursday, Larry Hardesty, Chuck Henry, and Julie Todaro will debate their visions for 21st century academic libraries in a program titled, "The Age of Information, the Age of Foolishness." Friday's fare will include an update on the electronic resources offered through TexShare and a program describing electronic reference services in real-time. Finally, on Saturday Trisha Davis from Ohio State University Libraries will provide the latest information on a topic for all academic libraries, “Licensing Electronic Resources.” I hope everyone will take advantage of these opportunities for continuing education. --Jan Kemp
2001/2002 Election of Officers This year, all of the CULD elected positions are open. A biography and brief statement from each candidate follow on the next several pages. A separate ballot is enclosed to mark, fold, and mail. Ballots must be received by March 12, 2001 to be counted. Be sure to vote!
CULD Research and Job Enrichment Grants The January deadline has passed for 2001 CULD grant applications, and
it's time to begin thinking about applying for a grant in 2002. CULD
grants can help academic librarians fund their research projects, and grants
are also available to pay travel and registration expenses for workshops,
conferences, and training. Visit the CULD web site at www.txla.org/groups/culd/grant.html
to find guidelines and application forms.

Candidates for Office
Maurice G. Fortin: Candidate for Chair of CULD I have always felt one should be very active in the profession. To that end, I have served in many capacities within TLA. I hope to use my term as Chair of CULD to encourage participation in our programs, services, and committees by all members of CULD. Education BA, University of North Texas, 1973

Jeanne R. Pyle: Candidate for CULD Chair I value TLA and CULD for the educational opportunities provided and
the legislative efforts that benefit libraries throughout the state.
I also appreciate the interaction with other professionals that enables
me to call upon my colleagues for support and advice. For these reasons,
I welcome the opportunity to give something back to the association and
division by serving as Chair of CULD. I would continue our efforts
to address the trends and issues impacting college and university libraries
today through programs, scholarships, and legislative activities.

1985-1987 Assistant Reference Librarian
Professional Activities Texas Library Association, Bylaws & Resolutions Committee, 1998-2001.
Jill Emery: Candidate for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect At the last TLA Annual Conference, a concern was raised about the aging
of our profession. I am one of the younger librarians involved professionally
at the State and National levels and I am not involved out of any traditional
responsibility to the profession or because I need to do this for tenure
review. My reason for involvement has more to do with collegiality and
professional enrichment. I believe that as Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of CULD,
I can work towards increasing the involvement of a younger generation of
academic librarians in Texas.

This is an exciting time for librarians in Texas, as we deal with a multitude of new challenges and opportunities. By working together, we can help shape the future of academic libraries. CULD provides a forum for librarians throughout the state to share expertise and network. In addition it serves the valuable purposes of impacting legislation and providing grants. My belief is that CULD should move toward promoting more collaborative efforts with our state library and other educational organizations. Having served on various TLA committees and more pointedly on the TexShare Electronic Information Working Group committee, it has become apparent to me that academic libraries in Texas should become more aware of the services of our State Library and actively work to promote partnerships between institutions and this body. Currently, more foundation and grant-awarding organizations are looking for collaborative proposals with mixed organizational participants. I believe that not only will academic libraries benefit directly from their collaborative efforts with our state library from foundations and grant-awarding organizations but that we can expect more resources from our legislators because we will be promoting services to a broader citizenry.
Teri Oparanozie: Candidate for CULD Secretary-Treasurer Having served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the TLA Acquisitions and Collection Development Round Table for two years, I am familiar with the types of duties required for this position. I would like to utilize what I have learned to serve a larger membership within TLA. I would also welcome the opportunity to work with others in CULD to promote programs and activities that will support the development of academic libraries and librarians throughout Texas. Diane Downing: Candidate for CULD Councilor I have agreed to run for the position of CULD Councilor in hopes that I can give something back to a profession that has made it possible for me to have a rich and rewarding professional career over the past 31 years. While being active as a librarian, I have not been as active in professional organizations as I might have been. I am honored to be considered for this important position and if elected, I promise to give the liaison responsibilities associated with this position my full attention and efforts. Diane Gwamanda: Candidate for CULD Councilor I welcome the opportunity to be considered for the position of Councilor for CULD. I feel it’s important for a councilor to be able to attend all sessions of council to represent the division and to bring information back to the division. I am already committed to attending TLA and Annual Assembly each year and look forward to serving responsibly as councilor for CULD. Education BA Northwestern College, 1981
