Spring 2003 Newsletter
Notes from the Chair…
by Martha Tarlton
CULD is sponsoring several excellent programs at Annual Conference.
More details are available in this issue of the
newsletter. I would like to thank Melody Kelly, Jon Luckstead, and
the Community/Junior College Discussion Group for
all their hard work in planning these programs.
This spring we will award our first CULD scholarship to a library school
student. Our scholarship initiative will help as we
work to recruit new members to the academic library profession.
At the membership meeting at annual conference, we will be voting on
some minor revisions to our bylaws. Check the
CULD website http://www.txla.org/groups/culd/index.html for a draft.
You will find a ballot for 2003/2004 CULD officers in this issue.
Many thanks to all who have agreed to run for office!
Please take a moment to look over the ballot, then complete and return
it to June Koelker, Nominations Committee chair.
Last but definitely not least, I encourage you to stay updated on legislation
at the state level impacting libraries. This is
a very tight budget year for the State of Texas, with many programs
such as TIF coming under close scrutiny. TLA’s
Texline listserv, the TexShare listserv, and the CULD listserv can
help keep you current on legislative matters.
See you in Houston at Annual Conference!
CULD Bylaws Revisions
Be sure to check out the revisions to the CULD bylaws on the CULD web
site. The current wording, as well as the
proposed changes, is available for you to check with a fine tooth comb.
If you need an executive summary, the gist of
the revisions is that CULD is proposing to change the current Grants
Committee to a new Scholarship Committee, and
award scholarships for library school students rather than job development/research
grants. As Martha mentioned, we
will be voting on these revisions at the CULD business meeting on Wednesday,
April 1.
Candidates for Office
The Nominating Committee has been hard at work selecting excellent candidates
to run for CULD offices. Many of the
biographies and statements of concern appeared in the Autumn 2002 newsletter,
which is available on the CULD web
site at: http://www.txla.org/groups/culd/index.html. Please consult
that issue for more information. There is one more bio
and statement of issues, which is included in this issue. The
official ballot is also included in this issue. You will need to
provide the stamp and a return address. If you receive the electronic
newsletter, the easiest thing to do would be to
print the 2 ballot pages on a duplexing printer. If you don’t
have access to one, just print out the ballot page and write
the addresses on the other side. (Ain’t technology grand?!)

CULD Community/Junior College Discussion Group Hosts Information
Literacy Presentations
By Jon Luckstead
Playing an increasingly vital role in academic librarianship, information
literacy is the focus of two back-to-back
presentations sponsored by the CULD Community/Junior College Discussion
Group is sponsoring at the TLA
conference in Houston. This past year, library professionals
at North Harris College developed and implements a
web-based survey using an active server page for student feedback of
library instruction. Monica Noram, Pradeep Lele,
Carolyn Jacobs, and Chris Gonzales will demonstrate their survey instrument
and explain how they use its instantly
compiled data to refine their library instruction in the program “Are
You Being Instructed?” on Thursday, April 3rd at
noon.
Another instructional project developed at North Harris College was
deemed S.I.L.I.—Sociology Information Literacy
Infusion. Librarians and sociology professors studies the effects
of their collaborative information literacy instruction on
student performance in a freshman-level course. Lynda Dodgen,
Sarah Naper, Olia Palmer, and Adrian Rapp will
explain how they went about the study, demonstrate instructional materials
they employed, and present their most
current findings in the program “Not so S.I.L.I.—Librarian Faculty
Collaboration for Information Literacy” at 1 p.m.
CULD Community/Junior College Discussion Group Business and Discussion
Meeting
The College and Junior College Discussion Group will hold its business
and discussion meeting on that same Thursday,
