Annual Conference – April 13, 2007

Minutes

Call to Order: by Teri Oparanozie, Councilor, at approximately 10 a.m. in Room 212B, San Antonio Convention Center

Attendance: Syma Zerkow (incoming Secretary/Treasurer), Jan Kemp (incoming vice-chair/chair-elect), Jennifer LaBoon (2008 Conference Program Committee liaison), and Janet Key (Executive Board Liaison).

Minutes: Minutes from Annual Assembly were approved with one correction: the theme of the 2007 conference should read "Strong Libraries, Strong Communities." Teri did not have copies of the minutes from the 2006 Conference so they will still need to be approved at Annual Assembly.

Reports:

General Topics:

Teri explained that Jill Mason was ill and Gary Ives and Jeanne Harrell were unable to attend so she would conduct the meeting. The results of the electronic balloting were: Gary Ives, Chair; Jan Kemp, Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect; Syma Zerkow, Secretary/Treasurer; Susan Andrews, Councilor; Marcella Lesher, Councilor-Alternate. 31 people attended yesterday’s program "Outside the Cover: Strengthening Your Collection with eBooks" co-sponsored with ACDRT. Today’s program "Take the Cloak of Invisibility Off Your e-Collections" is co-sponsored with TSLAC.

Jennifer LaBoon presented next year’s theme: "Books, Bytes, and Beyond!" She passed out information on deadlines, reminding us that program proposals are due on June 26, before Annual Assembly. She urged us to work with other groups to co-sponsor programs as meeting space in Dallas is tight. If funding for a particular program we wish to do is a problem, the Conference Program Committee may be able to help out. Conference evaluations will once again be online and she urged everyone to fill them out as they will help make next year’s conference even better.

Janet Key urged us to keep up with legislative issues. You can subscribe to TexLine which updates you on issues by contacting Gloria Meraz in the TLA Office. The membership meeting on Saturday will focus on legislative issues. Our budget is due by May 15 along with Annual Assembly meeting forms. Please make sure that TLA has your correct email address. You can check by going to the TLA website members only section. TLACast is entirely electronic so you will not receive it if the address is wrong or your spam filter blocks it. All groups are urged to contribute towards Tall Texans and to TLA Legislative Day. There is a TLA Blog up and running for the conference. TLA asks that we use the unit distribution lists on the TLA website for communication. In this way, we are assured that everyone who should receive the mail actually does receive it. A two-page hand-out on e-mail was distributed.

Members present discussed several topics for possible programs.

Treasurer: Teri distributed copies of the roundtable’s budget and expenditures as of March 31. It was decided to defer a decision on how much money to contribute to Tall Texans and Legislative Day until we had more information on costs incurred at Annual Conference.

Councilor: Teri reported that Ted Wanner is in a newly created position at TLA in charge of continuing education. The newest interest group that has formed is Distributed/e-Learning Interest Group.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
