TLA GODORT/MARCIVE "Knowledge is Power" Award
Cathy Nelson Hartman
A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governours, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. -- James Madison

Valerie Glenn has already given you Cathy's bio and background on her work history and great accomplishments within the world of government documents. We know her from a completely different perspective: as a great customer and advocate for the importance of making the documents more visible through good bibliographic access.
When she came her to current library almost 8 years ago, she wanted to know all about the service we had been providing to the Library at the Univ of North Texas since 1992. Working with our staff, she was a very good liaison and was gratefully on top of things. You could always count on her to bring things to our attention and to diplomatically let us know where improvement was needed. She is also a great source of ideas!
She worked with us on a project to get cataloging for Texas State Documents more accessible for Texas depository libraries and even though the arrangement we wanted ultimately did not work to our benefit, we were grateful for her wanting to include us from the start and for all the work she put into this.
We are well aware of all the work she has done with electronic records through the GPO Access Gateway and the CyberCemetary and with GODORT and Depository Library Council. It always pleases us to have a "mover and shaker" among our customers, and so we are honored to present this award to Cathy as it is most deserving!
