Vol. 8, #2 Spring 2003 News from the Texas Tech University LibraryAs of January 3, 2003, Government Documents/Maps took on the responsibility of providing reference service for Current Periodicals and Microforms (CP&M) which is located on the same floor of the Texas Tech University Library as Government Documents/Maps. The CP&M Desk was closed to have just one service desk for the Library Basement making it easier for patrons to receive assistance. The Department continues to provide IRS paper forms through the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's Banks, Post Office, and Library (BPOL) program. The Texas Tech University Libraries, including the Architecture Library, the International Cultural Center Library, and the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, and the Texas Tech University Law School Library are in the process of migrating to the Ex Libris system as the new integrated library system. This migration process began over 1½ years ago with an inventory of the data in the two systems in use - DRA and III. The past few months have been filled with completing table after table after table to ensure the proper conversion of this data into the new system. Government Documents, with some of its unique processing requirements, is providing a few challenges! The projected target date for production is May 2003. Work on the retrospective conversion/barcode project has been slowed somewhat by migration work, but the count is now over 60,000 items barcoded and processed. In November, the Map Collection received 743 withdrawn/duplicate topographic maps of Texas and New Mexico from the USGS Library in Denver. These old and long out of print maps (in scales ranging from 1:125,000 to 1:31,680) are a welcome addition that filled in many gaps in coverage. This link will take you to the lists: http://www.lib.ttu.edu/maps/TTU_texas_resources.htm The "Maps in the News" rotating exhibit in the basement elevator foyer has become a popular item. There is no shortage of events worldwide (or locally), and every Monday morning a new map from the collection is posted along with a brief explanation of why it is in the news.
