Vol. 13, #2 Spring 2008
Letter from the Chair
Howdy, Government Documents Aficionados!
I hope you're already making plans to attend the 2008 TLA Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas, on April 15-18. The next GODORT Business Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 4:00 - 5:50 p.m. GODORT will sponsor one program at the conference. Please see the announcement in this issue of Lone Star Docs for further details on the program.
Members should take a moment to review the revised bylaws that were developed by our Bylaws Committee: Bennett Ponsford, Tom Rohrig and Ellen Simmons. I extend my deep appreciation to the committee members for their hard work on keeping our bylaws up-to-date. GODORT members will vote on adoption of the bylaws at our next meeting in Dallas.
Are you interested in developing your leadership skills in a hands-on, no-pay but high-satisfaction environment? Do you know someone who is just right for this kind of an opportunity? At the next business meeting GODORT members will elect some of their own to fill the following offices: Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect and Secretary-Treasurer. On behalf of our Nominating Committee, I urge members to self-nominate and to nominate colleagues for these important posts. You may write to me to submit your nomination(s).
While I'm plugging for grassroots contributions let's start thinking about some of the "outstanding" business items that I remember from previous meetings: (1) review of standing rules, which we can amend on our own without recourse to the TLA Bylaws Committee; (2) review the status of the GODORT booth, discuss whether we want to continue exhibiting at conference, and what we would like to do, if anything, to refresh the look of the display; (3) find fresh, appealing ideas for programs at the next conference, an on-going challenge; (4) identify members willing to participate on our various ad hoc and permanent committees. Know of other issues we need to handle? Let me know.
I'm happy to address any concerns from the membership. I notice that traffic on the listserv appears to have slowed to a trickle, so I hope that means members are extraordinarily busy helping the many millions of library patrons clamoring for government documents, rather than suffering from a state-wide epidemic of doldrums. The point here, though, is that if members will take advantage of the listserv, it can expedite our business through discussions of many of the above matters.
