Minutes - Annual Assembly 2003

Media and Related Technologies Minutes Annual Assembly 7/11/03

Attendees:  Juanell Marks (Chair, presiding), Janice Cayton (Chair-Elect), Carol Simpson (Councilor), Jack Strawn, June Kahler Berry, Sharon Amaste (Board Liaison)

Juanell Marks opened the meeting at 10:05 a.m. As Barbara Camp (Secretary/Treasurer) was unable to attend, Janice Cayton volunteered to take minutes.  Sharon Amaste shared information from the Executive Board.  Sharon encouraged nominations of mid-career librarians for Tall Texans, asked for donations to the Legislative Reserve Fund, and noted the Task Force meetings that evening.  She also noted that the new listserv program will automatically sign up people, but that they can request to be removed.  She also noted that if your members do not have email, they will still need to be reached by regular mail or encouraged to give an email address. The group discussed sending postcards to members who do not list email addresses asking them to add their email.  Sharon also mentioned that the TLA Website is being redesigned.  Carol Simpson said she hoped that URLs would not be changing with the redesign.  The MRT(2) web page could contain more information.  Carol Simpson will be Webmaster and work on the page. Minutes of meetings will be posted there.  Sharon also mentioned the TLA Strategic Plan and asked for comments asap as Council will vote on it tomorrow.  She also thanked MRT(2) for supporting Tall Texans.

Jack Strawn, Chair of the Media Awards Committee, thanked MRT(2) for their continued support of the Media Awards Program.  He invited participation in the judging of entries which will be held Jan. 31, 2004 at O’Connor High School in San Antonio.  June Berry volunteered to help.  Jack also asked the roundtable to keep in mind that six members of the Texas Media Awards Committee are selected from members of MRT(2).  Juanell noted that she had some names including Nancy Gooch and Sonja Stewart.
Jack asked MRT(2) to consider sponsoring with the Texas Media Awards Committee a pre-conference for TLA 2005.  The tentative title would be:  How to do Student Produced Media Projects Inexpensively.  The group thought this was an excellent idea and agreed to work with the Texas Media Awards Committee.

Juanell asked to group to approve the budget:  $500 to Texas Media Awards for last year, $500 to Texas Media Awards for next year, $300 to Tall Texans, and $100 to the Legislative Reserve Fund.  These items were approved.  Member Angela Skaggs attended Tall Texans this past year.

Programs for TLA 2004 were discussed.  Janice Cayton presented the costs of LCD panels, screens, and mikes.  Janice also shared a program idea.  A librarian and computer teacher from Northside ISD are willing to present how they do integrated curriculum units.  They are not willing to present on Saturday morning which is MRT(2)’s usual slot—the last block of conference.  June Berry noted that Oliver Chen who teaches at UT School of Information was willing to present again.  Carol Simpson suggested the topic: Conservation of Non-Print Media.  She said this is a unit done in her Cataloging Class and that she could find students to help her.  As our membership has many non-school members, the Conservation of Non-Print Media topic was chosen.  The MRT(2) meeting and program will be Saturday, March 20 from 10 to 11:50 a.m.

As there was no further business the meeting was adjourned at approximately 11:00 a.m.
