  • Chair's Column

As the TLA Annual Conference is only a few months away, the New Members Round Table officers and committee chairs have been diligently working to get ready. As always, we will be very busy at the 2001 TLA Annual Conference in San Antonio from March 28 to 31.

We will again sponsor the TLA Conference Orientation 10:15 - 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, March 29. This program is a great way to learn the "ins and outs" of using the conference's resources effectively (programs, exhibits, TLA services, etc). We will also have a business meeting immediately after the program, and everyone is encouraged to attend, provide feedback, and become more involved in NMRT! In addition, we will sponsor the traditional Conference Bag Check Booth, which is an important service to TLA attendees and a critical fundraiser for NMRT. Please drop by and spend an hour or two volunteering your services -- it's a great way to support NMRT, as well as meet friendly folks! The locations of these activities will be provided in your conference programs.

Also, in this newsletter, you will also see a slate of candidates who are running for office in NMRT for 2001-2002. Please take just a few minutes out of your busy schedules to vote and mail the ballot to the designated address. We rely on your participation about the future of NMRT!

And last, but certainly not least, I would like to extend a deep and sincere "Thank You!" to all of the NMRT officers, committee chairs, and committee members for their outstanding work this year. I have learned a great deal from all of you, and you certainly made my term as Chair a rewarding one! Thanks! I hope to see all of you at the Annual Conference in San Antonio in March!

    Edward Kownslar
    TLA/NMRT Chair, 2000-2001

    Bylaws Revision

The Bylaws Revision Committee consisting of Chair Ann Daily, Linda Waggener and Laura Baker met virtually during early fall 2000 and presented a draft revision to the NMRT Executive Board at the Fall Executive meeting in Fort Worth October 14th, 2000. After incorporating suggested changes, the revision was sent for final review to the TLA Bylaws and Resolutions Committee, which will meet at Annual Assembly in late March, 2001. Following the Committee's approval, the revised Bylaws will be sent to the NMRT membership for adoption, probably with the summer newsletter.

If approved as submitted to the TLA Bylaws Committee, the bylaws revision will make it possible to make timely changes in some operating procedures in the future without the necessity for a full Bylaws revision.

    TLA Conference 2001

This year the TLA Annual Conference is entitled "21st Century Libraries: Unique and Unlimited". A sneak peak at the preliminary program reveals that the Conference itself promises to be unique and almost unlimited.

There are more than 225 programs, workshops, and events planned. Truly there is something of interest for everyone involved with libraries. Unique this year is a special "conference within a conference" on Saturday morning entitled "21st Century Texans".

More than 230 speakers will be making presentations, including Clifford Stoll and Liz Smith at the general sessions, and Richard Peck at the closing luncheon. Other speakers include library professionals, technical experts, and well-known authors.

In the vendor area there will be over 450 companies displaying and demonstrating their products and services. This is the third-largest library tradeshow in the world so allow plenty of time to browse. There will also be a New Technology Showcase inside the exhibit hall. Come join us in San Antonio, and enjoy the city and the Conference. The dates to mark on your calendar are March 28-31. The preregistration deadline is February 26 so don't delay. Start making your plans now to attend.

    Election Time!

The time has come to elect your new TLA NMRT officers for the 2001-2002 term. The new officers will be announced at the 2001 TLA Annual Conference in San Antonio, and will take office immediately after the conference. To assist you in making this important decision, information on each of the candidates is included below.

BALLOTS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MARCH 5, 2001.

    Vice Chair/Chair-Elect
Victor Schill is currently the Assistant Branch Librarian/Children's Librarian at the Fairbanks Branch Library of the Harris County Public Library in Houston. By offering a wide range of opportunities for involvement within the profession and TLA, NMRT is the gateway unit of TLA for colleagues new to librarianship and/or TLA. He has enjoyed working with the great group of people within the NMRT unit of ALA and gained valuable committee experience and professional friendships, and appreciates the value of the NMRT units within both TLA and ALA. Victor feels it is important to maintain the high standard of participation in the work of TLA that NMRT members provide, and to promote NMRT to colleagues already in the profession and especially to our future colleagues attending library school. Victor has served on various committee's with ALA and TLA and participated in the TALL Texans Institute.

Lea Worcester is currently the Electronic Resources Coordinator for the Arlington Public Library. Librarianship is her second career and the most enjoyable. In 1988, after graduating with a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Alaska Anchorage, she worked as a Librarian/Curator for the National Bank of Alaska's Heritage Library and Museum. Later, she moved to Texas where she worked as an archaeologist for the University of Texas at San Antonio and attended graduate School. A move to Arlington and a "temporary" job at the Arlington Public Library changed her goals and soon she was working full time as a circulation assistant while attending Texas Woman's University's Library Science Program. Graduating in 1998, she enrolled in their doctoral program, which has offered her many professional opportunities and enriched her life. Lea has served as the 2000 and 2001 Orientation Chair and plans on working with NMRT and TLA in the future.

    Secretary/Treasurer
Tori R. Gregory is currently a Branch Librarian at Hill College, Johnson County Campus in Cleburne. She is running for NMRT Secretary/Treasurer because one of her professional goals is deeper involvement in TLA. Tori wants to keep up with what happens in the library profession and to be part of what shapes the future of libraries. NMRT provides new members of TLA many opportunities to learn, get involved, and network with like-minded colleagues, and she would like to give back to NMRT by serving as an officer and, in time, by helping others who are beginning their library careers. Tori is Co-Chair of the 2001 Conference Bag Booth committee.

    District Meeting Coordinator
If you are interested in serving in this position, please contact Linda Waggener at lwaggene@fortworthlibrary.org.
