Minutes of Business Meeting
April 7, 1972, 8:00 a.m., Galveston, Texas

The annual business meeting of the Reference Round Table was called to
order by Chairman Lee Jones. The minutes of the 1971 meeting were read
by Secretary-Treasurer Marjorie Wheeler and were approved as read. She
also read the membership and financial reports (copy appended).

Mr. Jones spoke of the relative inactivity of the RRT the past two years
and its slight participation in the programs for the annual meetings. He
asked for comments and urged members to indicate any program or projects
in which they would be interested. The following comments were made by
members:

Lyn Benton - Perhaps RRT would be interested in compiling a glossary
of interlibrary cooperative reference terms. This is a project which
was recommended by the Reference Service Division of ALA, but RRT members
showed little interest.

Mabel Fischer - Because there is a lack of network use in state net-
works by small public libraries who hesitate to query large networks,
possibly RRT could address itself to what a reference question is and
how to state it; what reference tools are and which are used in certain
situations. She suggested a case study concept.

Len Radoff - A good public relations and educational job is needed
on the Texas List particularly for small libraries who have a special need
for it and may not realize its potential. This could be included in a
study of basic reference tools.

Lois Bebout - There is a need for a Winchell type reference tutorial
with syllabus included.

Carol Dugas - The Texas Library Journal is a good vehicle for an
article on basic Texas reference tools - possibly there could be a work-
shop before the tutorials. For librarians new to the area this would be
most helpful.

Charles Dwyer - A majority of RRT members are not at TLA. He suggested
a prepared presentation of reference tools to be taken to different meetings.
The tutorials are being well done but perhaps we could have a greater voice
in their planning.

After more discussion, a motion was made and seconded that Len Radoff
request the District Planning Program Committee for time at each district
meeting for RRT to sponsor a presentation of reference sources available to
Texas Librarians.

Two suggestions were made for tutorials for the coming year:
  1. A discussion of copyright and the effect on local Texas libraries.
  2. Case studies in reference work.
The Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Rita Paddock, presented a slate of officers of which the following were elected by the members present: Vice Cairman: M. Francine Morris, Univ. of Texas at Arlington Secretary-Treasurer: Linda Samuels, Univ. of Houston Lyn Benton, Deer Park Public, is incoming chairman. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Marjorie W. Wheeler, Secty-Treas.
