REFERENCE ROUND TABLE
Executive Committee Meeting
Texas Library Association Annual Conference
Corpus Christi, Texas
April 13, 1994
9:00 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.
The Executive Committee Meeting of the Reference Round Table (RRT) was called to
order by Bill Hord, Chairman. Members attending introduced themselves.
Terri Miller, Secretary-Treasurer, read the minutes of the Executive Board Annual
Assembly meeting July, 1993 in Austin. The minutes were approved as read. At this
time RRT has $2,237 on balance.
Bill Hord asked everyone to promote Texas Reference Sources. Bill said that the pre-
conference meeting "Reference and the Internet: Issues and Answers" was well
attended by approximately 130. He said that 100 had pre-registered and more signed
up at the conference. He then asked for committee reports.
Mary Ann Higdon, Councilor, reported that TLA has approximately 5600 members. The
Texas State Library will be up for review in 1995.
Jane Clausen, Nominating Committee Chairman, announced the new officers for 1994/95.
Melinda Townsel-Winston, Lois Bebout Award Committee, said that Margaret Nichols was
nominated for the Award. Her nomination was accepted by the Board members.
Discussion was held regarding awarding a cash award of $150, as well as a plaque. It
was decided to table the details of the cash award until annual assembly.
Bill Hord, Planning Committee, said that RRT booth was near the exhibit hall and
asked for volunteers to help staff the booth. Gretchen McCord Hoffmann said there
were flyers and information at the booth to attract new members. Discussion was held
regarding attracting TLA members to joining the RRT, such as focus groups,
questionnaires, district meetings, putting a pitch in TLA Cast.
Don Buchwald, Bylaws Revision Committee, said he had mailed out revisions of the
bylaws to the RRT members. Discussion was held regarding the Lois Bebout Award as to
whether or not it would be a permanent part of the Bylaws or an addendum. He said it
was possible it could be grandfathered into the Bylaws. Don also suggested that any
changes could be addressed in the upcoming newsletter. It was also discussed what
would happen if the Vice-Chair became vacant - how it should be filled - should
provision be made to fill it. It was decided to table this discussion until the
executive board meeting at annual assembly.
Old Business:
Bill Hord reported that members attending the Pre-Conference on the Internet were
very positive about what was discussed. TLA members attending ranged in experience
from neophytes to experts. Diane K. Kovacs, Reference Librarian, Kent State
University, was the guest speaker. She was very well received. This meeting was
instrumental in adding money into the RRT.
John Hepner, Newsletter Editor, said he could produce a June issue, but it's
imperative to receive the information by May 1. This issue usually covers
information gathered at the conference, committee reports, and upcoming news
information. He asked for everyone's cooperation. John has access to ALA E-mail and
is including pertinent information in the newsletter from that source. He also said
that he will be advertising Texas Reference Sources, which sells for $15.00.
New Business:
Richard Dickey said the conference program was looking very good. He had talked with
the speakers and they are enthusiastic and excited about participating.
Legislative Day was discussed by the members. It will take place in February, 1995
at which time issues requiring legislative action will be presented to the Texas
Legislature. It was voted on by the members to give $100 to the cause.
Discussion was then turned to the TALL Texas Leadership Program who is asking for a
stipend of $350. Discussion was held regarding giving a flat amount to be spread out
among the individuals being chosen, or giving it to one individual. The Executive
Board members voted to give the $350 stipend to a member of RRT who is chosen for
TALL Texans. Elaine Klobe, RRT member, will receive the stipend for 1994. Members
voted to review this stipend each year.
Members present were Bill Hord, Terri Miller, Richard Dickey, Don Buchwald, Mary Ann
Higdon, Karen Hendrick, Marilynn Green, John Hepner, Jane Clausen, Joyce Hopkins, Bob
Kelley, Gretchen McCord Hoffmann, Lynne Westerholm, Melinda Townsel-Winston, Lynne
Hambric, Cherry Luedtke, and incoming Secretary-Treasurer, Elaine Klobe.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Miller
