April 15, 1977 REPORT: TEXAS PERIODICAL INDEXING COMMITTEE The commitee was created by a vote of the Reference Roundtable membership at the 1976 meeting to undertake a joint indexing project of key Texas periodicals. The value of such an effort was made apparent by the usefulness of Texas 70, and the members had repeated expressed the need for continuation of the indexing of state material at RRT annual meetings. The inital effort will be modestly limited to approximately twenty titles. It was decided that the first step would be to identify any ongoing indexing being done by libraries and to poll librarians for the most needed titles to be included. Ann Graves, chairman of the Subcommittee to Identify Texas Periodical Indexing Projects, and her committee did an excellent job of collecting this information. Libraries in the state were surveyed and a ranked listing of 28 titles resulted. Of these, six or seven are already being indexed in some manner. The committee has also identified existing files of retrospective indexing which can possibly be used as a basis of subsequent indexing of earlier years, particularly 1971 through 1974, or for the preparation of a combined index of a few key titles for general information about the state. Another excellent possibility will be use of these files for preparation of indexes of biographical and geographical entries, a much needed publication. The major problem of a joint indexing project will be consistency of coverage. Use of a standard listing of terms will allieviate some of this, so the 1975-1976 READERS GUIDE will be used as a final check list for indexing entries. Twenty two persons have already volunteered to actually do indexing, fourteen libraries have indicated an interest in assisting. These are the libraries not represented by the 22 volunteers. Eighteen other libraries indicated a possible interest in assisting Using our ranked listing as a basis, we are ready to pair titles with indexers to prepare our initial volume. Present plans are to do this in two year increments, beginning with 1975-1976 and concurrently indexing for 1977. This may be too ambitious if we lack indexers. Setting October 1, 1977 as a due date for the material through 1975-1976, we should have our first index ready by the meeting of the RRT in 1978. Please urge any additional volunteers to contact me, if they havenot already expressed an interest in assisting with the project. I would like to recommend that the membership be consulted about the inclusion of the titles that are already being indexed in this index. Should an important title like Texas Monthly be excluded form this index of related material, since it does not have its own index but is included in a regularly produced index. Will most libraries have Access? Should the most needed titles be included in a single publication. My deepest thanks to Ann Graves and her committee for all of their efforts, Sincerely, Linda Samuels Chairman, Texas Periodical Indexing Committee NOT A FINAL LIST 4-15-77 LISTING OF TITLES FROM SURVEY RESULTS RANKED BY NUMBER OF VOTES: Title: Vote: Comment: Texas Monthly 28 Indexed in Access Texas Parade 17 Texas Highways 14 Texas Observer 12 Indexed in Access Texas Business Review 10 " PAIS Texas Parks and Wildlife 10 Texana 10 " Historical Abstracts Texas Town and City 8 Southwestern Historical Quart. 6 Texas Business 6 Military History of Texas & Southwest 5 East Texas Historical Journal 4 Texas Architect 4 Texas Libraries 4 " Library Lit.
