The Supervision, Management and Administration Round Table recognizes innovation excellence with the annual "Smart Award". This award is given to one library staff member annually for effective and successful implementation of an innovative project. The award is not limited to a supervisor, manager, or director but is open to anyone who implements a new program demonstrating best practices in management. The call for applications is issued in August. Applicants are required to complete the online form and submit it as directed on the form by the submission deadline. The application period has been extended and the deadling for this year is September 21, 2015.

Three finalists will be selected from the submissions and they will be invited to present their project and outcomes of the project at the annual TLA Conference during the Smart Award program. The winner is announced at the conclusion of the Smart Award program.

Cell Phone Incentive Project

The Cell Phone Incentive Project was a program that provided small rewards (candy bars, $5 gift cards, gel pens, etc.) to students who took their cell phone conversations outside the library study areas.  This was a much more positive approach to a perennial problem, and librarians enjoyed being the rewarders rather than the enforcers for a change.

Virtually Blooming Bluebonnets: Book Club in the Clouds

Rather than a traditional face-to-face summer reading camp that would last only a short time, Elementary library media specialists from Midlothian ISD created a program for 21st Century learners. This camp encouraged students to read books from the Texas Bluebonnet list for a seven-week period, discussing books with their peers, teachers, and media specialists through the Edmodo online platform. This collaborative, user-friendly program also encouraged participation from parents and community partners, including the A.H. Meadows Public Library in Midlothian.

Infographic Contest

To try and solve the issues of library promotion and the desire to teach IL skills that go beyond the one-hour IL session the librarians at Townsend Memorial Library (TML) implemented an infographic contest. It required entrants to create an infographic on the topic of their choice and submit it via email, Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest with the hashtag #tmlinfographic.

She was involved in the analysis of the infographic contest results and the planning for future contests.

TALL Texans 2013 Workplace Leadership Development Project

The 2013 TALL Texans were charged with two different leadership challenges, one of which was a workplace leadership development project. Our department reorganization was based on personal evaluation, combined with staff performing their own task assessment (including time spent on tasks), one on one consultations with staff, and incorporating the results from the Briggs Myers personality type testing each took, allowed us to reorganized and redefine roles within the department and create an improved workflow.
