Joining/Leaving/PostingSetting List PreferencesUpdating Your AccountTechnical Difficulties

The Texas Library Association (TLA) has assumed ownership of the TLC list.  The new list address is tlc@txla.org. Everyone who was subscribed to the TLC list as of Friday, September 26, 2003, is subscribed to the new TLA-TLC listserv.

Participation in the list

The TLA-TLC listserv will be open to anyone interested in joining the listserv.  Participants do not have to be TLA members, and no fee will be assessed of anyone staying on or joining the list.  TLA recognizes the great value of this communication tool for school librarians, and we are committed to ensuring its survival.

Purpose and list oversight

The purpose of this list is to enable a professional discussion among school librarians and interested individuals throughout the state.  The topics of the list relate strictly to school library matters.  The TLA-TLC list continues the same professional standards established under the list’s first administrator, the Texas Education Agency.

A panel of member librarians is responsible for oversight of the discussion. Anyone engaging in inappropriate discussions will be banned from the list, as recommended by the moderating panel.

To use the web interface

The TLA-TLC listserv now offers a web interface to subscribe and unsubscribe yourself, set your personal email delivery preferences and read archived messages posted to the list.  To view this web interface, please visit http://web2.txla.org/read/?forum=tlc .

Instructions for joining, leaving, and posting to the list

  • To POST a message, send your email to tlc@txla.org. Messages will be posted to the list immediately upon being sent.
  • To SUBSCRIBE, send a completely blank email (no signature line(s) and no automatically attached disclaimers;  i.e.,  nothing in the body of the email) to join-tlc@txla.org.
  • To UNSUBSCRIBE, send a blank message to leave-tlc@txla.org.

Instructions for setting list preferences

In order to execute any of the following commands, you must send an email to lyris@txla.org.  You must include the specific command in the body of the email.

Instructions for updating your TLC listserv account

There have been numerous requests for information on how to update your TLC listserv account. Below are some additional email commands on how to change your subscription settings. You may now set your subscription to a MIME format or an Index format. Anyone who has already set their account to digest mode, can now set it to MIME digest. Please see differences and instructions below. TLA will also be working on an interface to allow for reading archived messages. A message will be sent to the list as soon as this feature has been configured.

If you experience problems with the commands below, please check your email options. This listserv software prefers that the request come from a plain text email message, rather than a rich text or html email. For example, in Outlook, you would open a blank email and go to "Format" and choose "plain text", then type your email with your particular setting request. Also, please be sure you do not have two email addresses subscribed.

In addition, you will now notice that [tlc] will be appended to the subject line of each message posted in order to clearly identify the message as coming from the TLC list. Also, the unsubscribe command will always print at the bottom of each email posted to the list.

Modifications to your tlc subscription should be sent to lyris@txla.org
Please do not send these requests to tlc@txla.org.

Your individualized choices are:

Normal Mail

Send an email to lyris@txla.org with the words set tlc mail in the body of the email.

When the tlc list was created, everyone was set to this type of standard mail delivery. You will receive copies of messages posted to the list immediately.

Digest Mail

Send an email to lyris@txla.org with the words set tlc digest in the body of the email.

Each night, around 12:00 am, you will receive a single email message containing all the messages contributed to the forum that day. At the top of the message will be a numbered list of the subjects in that digest, followed by the complete messages themselves. This setting sometimes delivers strange characters as it does not keep the formatting of the original message.

MIME Digest Mail

Send an email to lyris@txla.org with the words set tlc mime in the body of the email.

The same as a digest, but in MIME format so that the individual messages' formatting is preserved. Some email clients such as Outlook will show the digest as a series of attachments.

Index Mail

Send an email to lyris@txla.org with the words set tlc index in the body of the email.

Each night, around 1 in the morning, you will receive a single email message containing all the subject lines of all the messages contributed to the forum that day. If any of the messages interest you, the bottom of the index gives the email command that will retrieve the bodies of the messages.

Thank you for your patience as we fine tune this wonderful communication tool.

Cathy

Technical difficulties

If you run into technical difficulties (e.g., your messages bounce back or you are not receiving any mail), there are typically two main reasons for these problems and need to be resolved at the subscriber’s address.

  • ACCOUNT ON HOLD MESSAGE: This email is to notify you that this email address has been placed in a "hold" status.  Your subscription has been held because at least 2 recent messages have been either bounced by your email system, or could not be delivered at all. Your membership can be restored to normal by sending a blank email to unhold@txla.org.
  •   UNABLE TO RECEIVE MESSAGES: Note that if your email address continues to reject mail your subscription will once again be held.  Common causes for rejected mail are a firewall that does not allow mail delivery to groups.  To correct this problem, please contact your IT department and ask them to allow all postings from the domain @txla.org.

  •   YOU ARE UNABLE TO POST:  First, please verify that you are subscribed to the list. Another possible problem may be due to the fact that the email address is incorrect. Your subscribed email must be exactly as it comes across on an email message from you.  For example, you may be able to send and receive mail from bob@acme.com, but the email actually comes across as bob@mail.acme.com.  In order to post messages, your subscribed email address must include the "mail" extension in the email address.
