FROM THE EDITOR

Texas Library Association Annual Conference is just around the corner. At this year's meeting, changes in the bylaws will be voted on, and new officers will be elected. Membership in TRGCC has increased this year by about 11% (30 new members), so the Executive Board is looking forward to welcoming everyone to the business meeting and the round table's conference program.

This year, we're doing things a little differently. The business meeting will be at its usual time, Wednesday morning, April 21, at 10:00 a.m. The conference program will be that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Executive Board will be monitoring attendance at both meetings and would be interested in hearing from members about both time slots.

Now, a message from our Chair, Carol Winship:

TRGCC is a large Round Table with almost 300 members. Yet, each year, our Nominating Committee has difficulty filling the slate of officers to be elected at our annual business meeting. It should not be that hard to find four of you willing to stand for election. We need a better way to locate those of us ready and willing to serve. Let's discuss this topic at our annual meeting in April.

Details about the conference program, the bylaws changes, and the preconference program that TRGCC is co-sponsoring, plus the slate of this year's candidates are all contained in this newsletter. See you at the business meeting!

PRACTICAL CATALOGING WILL BE TOPIC FOR TRGCC PROGRAM AT TLA ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Practical Cataloging: Tricks of the Trade will be Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. Panelists will answer some age-old questions: I know how to handle reference questions and storytime, but do you really want me to catalog, too? Where do I start? Do I have to do this all myself? Do I have to buy all of those cataloging tools, or can I find them on the Internet? Is there a way to speed things up? The panel features veteran catalogers from all types of libraries and all types of cataloging situations. Jill Blake is Catalog Manager at Fort Worth Public Library. Nancy Boykin Bounds is Head of Cataloging at the Newton Gresham Library, Sam Houston State University. Wanda Cuniff is a school librarian at T. J. Rusk Middle School, Nacogdoches Independent School District. Karen McIntosh is Assistant Director at Lynn Library Learning Center and oversees Technical Services at the Amarillo College Learning Center. The panelists will discuss a variety of topics from handling cataloging as one of many job tasks to choosing an outsourcer. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations. Materials on and representatives of outsourcing firms also will be available after the panelists' presentations. Please join TRGCC for an informative and fun program. Carol Winship, TRGCC Chair, presiding.

The program is intended for those involved in library technical services, library automation, reference services, and administrators and managers who oversee such areas. TRGCC's co-sponsors are Government Documents Round Table, Reference Round Table, Interlibrary Loan Round Table, and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Cathy Hartman, presiding.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Catalog Librarian, Houston Community College, 1995-Present; Catalog Librarian, Harris County Public Library, 1990-1995; Technical Services Coordinator, North Richland Hills Public Library, 1989-1990.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Member, American Library Association; Member, Texas Library Association; Member of Continuing Education and Development Committee (TLA); Secretary of Consortium of Academic Libraries and Learning Resources (CALLR); Past Chair of CALLR; Past Program Chair of CALLR.

STATEMENT OF CONCERNS: New and evolving technology has profoundly affected the cataloging profession (i.e., automation, the Internet, automated cataloging tools, etc.). Cataloging professionals must keep up with these technological advances and develop more effective ways to deal with them. I see the TRGCC as an excellent opportunity for experienced professionals to participate in idea exchange, discussion of new technology, other timely topics affecting the profession, continuing education opportunities, and much more.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Member, American Library Association; Member, Texas Library Association; Member, Online Audio-Visual Catalogers Association; Member, Texas Association of School Library Administrators; Contract employee for Follett Software Company conducting workshops; Contract employee for Ameritech Library Automation conducting workshops.

STATEMENT OF CONCERNS: One of my primary goals as a cataloger is to provide cataloging which is consistent with nationally and professionally acceptable standards and rules, yet temper those decisions with the needs of my patrons. I also strive for consistency in cataloging from one library to the next, be it public, academic, or school. By doing this, we simplify access to our users, regardless of their background, education, or "home library" location. As databases become more and more accessible on the Internet, it becomes increasingly important to try and avoid local interpretations if they get in the way of access or serve to confuse our users.
