TRGCC NewsletterTRGCC Talks SANFORD BERMAN, PATRICIA THOMAS TO SPEAK Sanford Berman, Hennepin County Library, Minnesota and Patricia M. Thomas, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, California will speak on "Subject Access to Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc.-theoretical and practical approaches" at the Texas Regional Group of Catalogers and Classifiers' 1992 TLA Conference Program scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 1992 at 10:00a.m. The program will address the background of subject access to works of the imagination and will provide practical information on implementing the guidelines found in the 1990 final report of the Subcommittee on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc. of the then RTSD Subject Analysis Committee. Historically, subject and genre headings to works of the imagination have not been provided. With the publication by ALA in 1990 of the Subcommittee's final report, this situation has changed. Now, many organizations, including the Library of Congress and OCLC, have agreed in principle with the application of subject and genre headings as outlined in this final report. Currently, any OCLE full-level cataloging institution may provide this subject access to records they create. By early 1992, OCLC had enlisted 8 institutions access by offering financial benefit to the enhancing institutions. OCLC continues to solicit other libraries for this project. Sanford Berman is well known for his intelligent, humorous, and pointed commentary on Library of Congress subject headings. He has published extensively in the area of subject access and semantics. Patricia M. Thomas, a member of ALCTS' Subject Access Committee, is Head of Cataloging at on of the 8 OCLC institutions currently upgrading records with this type of subject access. She will contribute her practical experience in applying the new guidelines. We are fortunate to sponsor this program in conjunction with the Public Libraries Division and the 1992 Conference Program Committee. The business meeting will precede the program. The results of the election will be announced at the end of the business meeting. MARK YOUR CALENDARS TO JIN US IN WELCOMING SANFORD BERMAN AND PATRICIA THOMAS TO TEXAS! CHAIR-ELECT WILSON SET 1992/1993 GOALS The Texas Regional Group of Catalogers and Classifiers is both a Round Table
of the Texas Library Association and one of over 40 regional groups of the Council
of Regional Groups of ALCTS. As such, our focus should be aimed at both local
involvement with our own membership and national participation with the Council
of Regional Groups. Encourage communication with our members in order to inform them of contemporary issues in cataloging and to learn of their concerns. Assure the continuation of our newsletter, TRGCC TALKS, and to encourage contributions form members. Publish the electronic mail addresses of consenting TRGCC members in TRGCC TALKS Continue to develop ties with other TLA divisions and groups as we did this year with the Public Libraries Division and the Conference Program Committee. Investigate the possibility of co-sponsoring, with other interested TLA units and the possibly with the assistance pre-conference for the 1994 TLA Annual Conference on multiple versions or format integration. Represent TRGCC at the meetings of the ALCTS Council of Regional Groups in San Francisco and Denver. Provide support to the new chair-elect in planning a stimulating conference program in 1993 Exercise fiscal responsibility by operating within the budget of TRGCC. It has been interesting and challenging serving as Chair-Elect since last April
in Fort Worth, and I hope that this year brings more opportunities for increased
awareness of cataloging issues and appreciation for the work we perform. I want
to thank Keitha Ramsey, Susan Harvey, and Carol Winship for their assistance,
and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting and program
in Houston on April 9, 1992. The volume of e-mail on AUTOCAT varies greatly, depending on the interest in, or controversy about, current topics. When there is something of relevance to someone else here in my library, I forward the message electronically to that person. Those that are on other lists do the same for me. While each library bulletin board is interesting, trying to keep up with more than a couple would be a full time job. Many users sample several lists to select those most relevant. Joining and canceling are very simple, and you can put a stop on messages when you are going to be away. At first I felt very reserved about communicating on the bulletin board. But as I saw librarian, whose names I read about in the professional literature, sharing their successes and their failures, I realized the many similarities we share as catalogers and librarians. Here at Sam Houston State University, using the university's BAX/MNS computer, AUTOCAT users connect using BITNET. Access is also available using INTERNET and school librarians can use TEnet. Another system may require a different sequence and syntax, this is ours. Enter
MAIL at the system prompt. At the mail prompt, enter SEND, then it says TO enter: A message can also be sent to a particular member, if you have the address. Many members no include their e-mail address in correspondence. Gilles in another part of you computer account can correspondence. Files in another part of your computer account can also be attached to e-mail messages and sent electronically. Librarians literally around the world are now at our fingertips with electronic
mail. While most members are in academic libraries, AUTOCAT is there, for all
librarians, as an open forum for those interested in cataloging issues. (Editor's not: Nancy's article began in the fall issue. Additional information on Internet use can be found in the "Networked resources" column in COMPUTER IN LIBRARIES.)
