The purpose of the Young Adult Round Table is to promote and to improve library services for young adults in Texas. The purpose will be achieved specifically in the following manner:
- To provide for and to stimulate the professional and the career development of personnel in public and school libraries;
- To facilitate effective cooperation among library personnel in public and school libraries;
- To identify, develop, and maintain library services that will meet the informational, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of young adults of Texas;
- To work cooperatively with other round tables, interest groups, or divisions that have similar or allied interests.

The Young Adult Round Table sponsors the Texas Lone Star Reading List and the Tayshas High School Reading List, and the Young Adult Reading Incentives Award.
Membership in the Young Adult Round Table will include any individual, institution, commercial business, or affiliate who is a member of TLA and who elects to be a member of YART upon payment of the membership fee as provided by the TLA Bylaws.
The Texas Library Association sponsors reading lists solely to encourage free voluntary reading.
