Grants, Scholarships, and Stipends

The Texas Library Association invites TLA members to submit applications for scholarships,
research grants, and conference stipends to be awarded in the spring of 2009.

Special Purpose Grants and Stipends


DEMCO, Inc. / TLA Research Grant: Up to $2000

Available to TLA members to help underwrite the costs of a research project. See guidelines. Qualitative and quantitative studies related to library issues will be funded. Pilot projects and experimental programs involving several libraries are encouraged.

An application (below) must be submitted online no later than January 30, 2009.

Escue Annual Conference Stipend: $250

Available for a paraprofessional living or working in Texas to defray the costs of attending the TLA Annual Conference, April 2009,  in Houston.

Vivian Greenfield Education Award: $1,500

  • Purpose of scholarship is: To provide funding for an educational endeavor reinforcing work with youth. This can include, but is not limited to, professional development activities (taking a course or attending a conference), implementing a new idea  in the workplace, performing a study, and more.
  • Applicants may be considered for renewal one time (must reapply each year).
  • Awarded once each year; award determination to be made in spring of each year.
  • Awardee must:
     
    1. Reside in Texas
    2. Write a goals statement outlining a desired educational endeavor revolving around youth services
    3. Be a TLA member in good standing

An application must be submitted no later than January 30, 2009.

Texas Library Disaster Relief Grant

A fund to provide relief to Texas libraries that are impacted by disasters such as fires, floods, and storms.

TLA Scholarships


Evaluation criteria for TLA scholarships

To apply for any TLA scholarship listed here, complete the online application and submit by January 30, 2009.

Walter H. Escue Memorial Scholarship: $1,000

  • Texas resident
  • concentrating studies in Technical Services, Systems Administration, or  Library Automation
  • attained at least a B average during the last two years of a baccalaureate degree program
  • accepted as a graduate student at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program

Ray C. Janeway Scholarship: $2,000

  • Texas resident
  • attained at least a B average during the last two years of a baccalaureate program
  • accepted as a graduate student at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program

TLA Summer School Scholarship: $500

  • Texas resident
  • attained at least a B average during the last two years of a baccalaureate degree program
  • must be registered for  MLS degree courses during a summer session at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program  (While applicants may be enrolled year round, the scholarship applies only to the summer session.)

 Garrett Scholarship: $1,000

  • Texas resident
  • concentrating studies in children's, young adult, or school librarianship
  • attained at least a B average during the last two years of a baccalaureate degree program
  • accepted as a graduate student at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program

Van Dusen-Tobin-Kaiser Scholarship: $1,000

  • Texas resident
  • pursuing graduate studies leading to a career as an elementary school or children's librarian
  • attained at least a B average during the last two years of a baccalaureate degree program
  • accepted as a graduate student at a Texas ALA-accredited library education program

This scholarship is awarded in alternate years and will next be awarded in Spring 2010.

Jeannette Marquis Memorial MLS Scholarship: $1,000

  • Purpose of scholarship: To increase the number of bilingual librarians working in Texas public or school libraries.
  • May be considered for renewal one time (must reapply each year)
  • Awardee must:
    • be bilingual (Spanish-English);
    • reside in Texas;
    • be enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program and be taking at least 2 courses in a semester;
    • plan to or already be working in a public or school library that serves Latino patrons; and
    • have a degree plan that demonstrates a commitment to public or school libraries.

The recipient is also eligible to receive a $300 stipend to defray TLA annual conference expenses.  This stipend is also from Jeannette Marquis' family to honor the memory of TLA staffer Lynda Becker.

Deadline for all scholarships listed above is January 30, 2009.

TLA (ALA) Spectrum and Century Scholarships : $2000 each

The Texas Library Association (TLA) is committed to insuring that the state of Texas has a diverse workforce of professional librarians. Therefore, the Association will provide a supplemental $2,000 scholarship to each American Library Association Spectrum or Century Scholar who:

  • is a TLA member;
  • is enrolled in an ALA-accredited masters program in library and information studies at a Texas University; and
  • agrees to work in a Texas library for two years following completion of degree requirements for the master's program.
