RESOLUTION IN
HONOR OF MARILYN JOHNSON
WHEREAS, The Continuing Education Providers Interest Group is deeply
grateful to Marilyn Johnson for her exceptional work as an officer
and a member; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Johnson was appointed Chair of the Continuing
Education and Development Committee for 2007-2007 and selected to
participate in TALL (Texas Accelerated Library Leaders) Texans
Leadership Development program in 2002; and
WHEREAS. Marilyn Johnson was on the forefront of many cutting-edge
library technology trends and issues, and was instrumental in
establishing the Texas State Library’s videoconferencing network, as
well as establishing the agency’s leadership and expertise in local
compliance with the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Johnson was the principal administrator in three
statewide Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grants (totaling
approximately $3.3 million) that resulted in hundreds of small,
rural Texas public libraries getting the computers and technology
they needed to serve their communities; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn Johnson dedicated her entire professional library
career to improving libraries at a statewide level; and
WHEREAS, Beyond her considerable professional contributions and
strengths, Marilyn Johnson’s personal strengths gained the deep
friendship and admiration of her peers; words including “integrity”,
“professionalism”, “perseverance”, and “grace”, and adjectives such
as “delightful”, “positive”, “compassionate”, “intelligent”, and
“fair”, are used by many to describe her; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Texas Library Association posthumously honors
Marilyn Johnson for her contributions to the development of
libraries in the State of Texas; for her leadership and her
friendship (and for her many “happy dances” that brought joy to
colleagues); and, for her life well-lived and full of purpose.

Resolution in Honor of Christine Peterson
Whereas,
The Continuing Education Providers Interest Group is deeply grateful
to Christine Peterson for her exceptional work as an officer and a
member; and
WhereaS,
Christine Peterson has most notably maintained a comprehensive
calendar of Continuing Education events for library personnel over
the past seven years, without compensation and with consistently
high quality for the benefit of all libraries in Texas; and
Whereas,
Christine Peterson has also served the Texas Library Association
with distinction as a member of the Telecommunications Committee,
the Southwestern Bell Grant Committee, the Conference Local
Arrangements Committee, chair of the Automation and Technology Round
Table, and chair of the Digital Libraries Interest Group; and
Whereas,
Christine Peterson has consistently
presented educational programs of the highest quality at the annual
conferences of the Texas Library Association for the improvement of
library services across the state, above and beyond the role of her
employment; and
Whereas,
Christine Peterson has demonstrated impeccable reliability, honesty,
and integrity in all her work with libraries, government agencies,
and the Texas Library Association; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That Christine Peterson be recognized and commended by the
Texas Library Association for her outstanding service to libraries
throughout the State of Texas.

Resolution Honoring State
Representative Dan Branch
WHEREAS, The
Honorable Dan Branch has been a champion and a longstanding leader
in supporting Texas academic, public, and school libraries; and
WHEREAS,
Representative Branch, member of the Texas House Appropriations and
the Public Education Committees, has worked tirelessly and with
unflinching commitment to secure additional resources for the
libraries of Texas for the betterment of everyone in our state; and
WHEREAS,
Representative Branch has sponsored riders to secure $2.5 million
per year for K-12 school library online resources and $500,000 per
year for the TexShare program; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That
the Texas Library Association hereby honors State Representative Dan
Branch for championing libraries and for his continued leadership in
supporting all Texas libraries.

Senator Robert Duncan
Whereas,
The Honorable Robert Duncan, member of the Texas Senate Finance
Committee, has been a supporter of Texas public school libraries and
a champion for excellence in education; and

Senator Duncan has been a leader for library development and
supported appropriating $2.5 million per year for school library
online library resources; and
Whereas,
This funding, as an allocation from the Texas Education Agency
Technology Allotment, ensures that all public school children in the
State of Texas have equitable access to libraries and online
learning materials; now, therefore, be it

Resolution in APPRECIATION OF
Rhoda Goldberg
Whereas,
Rhoda Goldberg has served as Chair of the Texas Library Association
Legislative Committee through the 76th, 77th,
and 80th Texas Legislative Sessions and guided the TLA
legislative efforts over six years; and
Whereas,
During her terms as Legislative Committee Chair, Rhoda Goldberg
coordinated the library community’s advocacy efforts to fund K-12
databases, to create the Loan Star Libraries direct aid program, to
increase funds for TexShare, to enact a state match for school
library materials, to defeat the Uniform Computer Information
Transactions Act, to secure authority for regional library systems
to reinvest program income, to gain the reauthorization of the Texas
State Library and Archives Commission, to continue
telecommunications discounts for libraries and schools, and many
other library initiatives; and
Whereas,
Rhoda Goldberg undertook all these difficult challenges with an
absolute commitment to improve the standing of all types of
libraries in Texas and devoted countless hours over the course of
these years to planning, coordinating, testifying, visiting with
legislators, and encouraging grassroots support; and
Whereas,
Rhoda Goldberg accepted with grace and uncommon strength the
sometimes difficult task of reconciling different positions and
standing up to the powers that be in support of the needs of the
members of the Texas Library Association; and
Whereas,
Rhoda Goldberg’s conviction, integrity, and determination have been
at the heart of the Texas Library Association’s legislative efforts
through many of its most difficult but rewarding experiences; and
Whereas,
Rhoda Goldberg’s humility in accepting any praise for her work is
well-known; now, therefore, be it
Resolved,
The members of the Legislative Committee extend their sincere
appreciation and admiration for Rhoda Goldberg’s outstanding work
and vast contribution to the betterment of all libraries in Texas.

WHEREAS, The Honorable Kip Averitt has been a
long-time friend and supporter of Texas libraries during his 15-year
career in the Texas Legislature; and
WHEREAS, Senator Averitt has proven himself a
leader in the Texas Senate as a key member of the Senate Finance
Committee; and
WHEREAS, Senator Averitt has used his
leadership role to demonstrate his commitment to libraries by his
recommendation to increase the funding of the Loan Star Libraries
program; and

Resolution Honoring Patricia
Smith
WHEREAS, Patricia Helm Smith has ably led the
Texas Library Association for the past 20 years and has successfully
managed not only a diverse group of library supporters but also a
diverse group of TLA staff; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Smith’s vision, commitment,
and expertise in advancing the cause of Texas libraries is
legendary, while her equally impressive skill in managing,
motivating, and…shall we say…expediting the work of staff may be
less well known; and
WHEREAS, The TLA staff can bear witness to the
infallible expertise of Patricia Smith in eliciting enthusiasm,
hard-work, and commitment from everyone who works with her; and
WHEREAS , Patricia Smith leads by the most
difficult of strategies—setting an example of tireless work,
attention to detail, consummate skill, and positive support; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Smith’s inexhaustible good
humor, kindness, and compassion can only be matched for her uncanny
ability to predict when fudge and other assorted chocolates must be
provided to members and staff post haste; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Smith is a professional and
personal treasure to all in the library community and the staff who
are so fortunate to work under her leadership and friendship; and
WHEREAS, Staff members alike can vouch for the
fact that Patricia Smith does indeed work morning, noon, and night
year-round and that her 20th anniversary with TLA does
indeed mark 20 FULL YEARS of work; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the members and staff of the
Texas Library Association congratulate Patricia Smith on her 20th
anniversary with TLA and wish her continued success, good health,
and great times with the library community, TLA, and TLA staff.
