Recovery Begins

The scenes of devastation, desolation and destruction in the areas of Texas most affected by Hurricane Harvey are heart rending. It is impossible to comprehend the suffering and loss that hundreds of thousands of people are experiencing. We find hope, however, in the images of heroic rescues, towering stacks of donated goods, lines of volunteers at shelters, and stories of people from all walks of life coming together to help.

The outpouring of support from the library community has been truly inspiring. Almost 450 individuals and companies have donated more than $32,000 to the Texas Library Association (TLA) Disaster Relief fund over the past week. Thank you to all of our generous donors! We will continue to update and share this list of supporters as donations are received.

Offers of books, furniture, volunteer assistance, computers, preservation services, and more are pouring in to TLA from library supporters from around Texas and the country. We are working on an information sharing system to help connect those offering assistance to libraries in need. Look for more information next week!

Recovery has been described as a marathon, not a sprint; however, perhaps a more accurate metaphor is recovery as an ultra-marathon combined with an ultra-triathlon. It will be a test of endurance, but we will push through because our library community will need support for months, perhaps years to come.
