Plan Ahead! Mark Your Calendars Now for TLA '96!

Seven thousand librarians, library friends, educators, and exhibitors are expected to converge on Houston, April 23-26, 1996, for the Texas Library Association (TLA) Annual Conference to be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The conference theme, Libraries: Linking Technology and Tradition, will explore the changing role of the library in the information age.

Conference organizers have already begun to pen an impressive list of anticipated speakers. On the technological side, Paul Evan Peters, CEO of the Coalition for Networked Information, is slated to speak on the development of strategies for providing access to information using the powerful and rapidly expanding global information infrastructure. As a voice of tradition, Virginia Hamilton, one of today's most distinguished writers for children and young adults will educate and entertain. Joining these General Session speakers will be other literary notables such as Sharon Creech, 1994 John Newbery Medal winning author of the book, Walk Two Moons, as well as Naomi Nye, whose latest work, The Tree Is Older than You Are, is currently being published by Simon and Schuster.

Nearly 1000 exhibitors are scheduled to fill the first level of the convention center to offer library professionals a detailed look into library materials, techniques, and trivia. Houston will roll out the red carpet for conference attendees with events, tours, and receptions to be held for their enjoyment.

Barbara Gubbin, director of the Houston Public Library and president of TLA, is proud of the fact that 20 committees and countless volunteers have hit the ground running, having already put thousands of hours of work into a conference that is yet six months away. TLA '96 promises to be unprecedented in value to librarians statewide.
