1997 Texas Book Festival

Schedule of Events  |  Featured Authors

It’s time to mark your calendar for the second annual Texas Book Festival scheduled for November 1st and 2nd! Although one or two things have changed about the 1997 event, the basic celebration is the same: people getting together to honor the written, spoken, and "performed" word in the name of, and to benefit, Texas public libraries.

What’s the same. . . ?

The Texas Book Festival chair is Laura Bush, First Lady of Texas (or as she is now known: "Mrs. Library").

Writers from Texas and those who write about Texas will read from their works and discuss their inspirations both in panels and as individual speakers.

Texas performers will entertain with songs and poetry.

The dinner gala will feature noted speakers and a silent literary auction.

Many events will be in the Texas Capitol and in the Capitol extension.

Children’s authors will read from or perform their works for children.

Children’s authors will discuss their works for adults both in panels and as individual speakers.

Booksellers will display and sell their books and book-related items.

One entire tent will be devoted to authors autographing their works.

Booths of book and library-related areas will be in the vendor tent.

A children’s activities tent will welcome families for both days of the festival.

A core of volunteers will be available to direct Festival attendees to their programs, assist people in carrying items to their car, transporting them between the capitol and the tents, and finding the right tent at the right time!

Librarians will be everywhere!

What’s changed. . . ?

The location of the tents has moved to the southwest corner of the capitol.

The gala dinner will be on Saturday evening.

Children’s activities will be on the Capitol grounds.

There will be more authors and performers than last year. (Between 90 and 100 this year!)

There will be a variety of opportunities for libraries and librarians to be involved, including:

Information about last year’s award winners will be featured in such locations as the gala, booths, book and library-related areas.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission will have a space in the Capitol extension for on-line service exhibits, spotlighting last year’s award winners.

The Texas Library Association will have an expanded exhibit booth area.

Many of our generous 1996 Festival supporters will be returning from last year including: NationsBank; AT&T; Texas Monthly; Austin American-Statesman; AND they are being joined by many others this year including our own generous benefactors, the Tocker Foundation.
