T-AF1 Texas state publications. Austin: Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas State Pub. Clearinghouse, 1963- . Monthly. Free. ISSN 0363-4736 TexDoc L1900.6 D659
Title varies: Texas state documents (1963-Jan. 1989)
Supercedes: Checklist for official state publications (1967); Checklist of official state publications (May 1965-1966); Checklist official state publications (1963-Apr. 1965); Official state publications (Nov. 1952-1962); and Checklist (1921-Jun. 1952). These listed only publications distributed to depository libraries, including individual issues of periodicals. They continue as shipping lists of publications delivered to depository libraries. Not indexed.
A monthly listing of monographs, series, annuals, and new periodicals published by Texas state government agencies and institutions of higher education and received by the Texas State Publications Clearinghouse. Excludes job announcements, news releases, bills, slip laws, opinions, daily journals, issues of periodicals, and other ephemeral materials.
Each issue includes a directory of all Texas state depository libraries.
Issuing agencies alphabetized by key word in the agency name. Since Sep. 1989, address and telephone number of the agency has been included. State institutions of higher education listed separately following the agency section.
Titles arranged alphabetically under issuing agency. Since Sep. 1989, each entry includes the following elements: 1) Texas Documents Classification number; 2) title; 3) author; 4) edition; 5) publication date; 6) pagination; 7) frequency; 8) series title and number; 9) title and content notes; 10) depository and microfiche availability symbol; 11) OCLC record number; and 12) sequential entry number. Flyers and leaflets (often not retained by depository libraries) are listed alphabetically as "Leaflets" under their issuing agencies.
Prior to Sep. 1989, each entry included the following elements: 1) depository availability symbol; 2) sequential entry number; 3) title; 4) pagination; 5) date; 6) author; 7) series title and number; 8) number of microfiche (beginning Jan. 1980); and 9) Texas Documents Classification number (beginning Apr. 1975).
Following the agency and institutions sections, each issue includes a subject index listing title, classification number and entry number under subject headings assigned from the Texas state publications thesaurus (T-AF7). Until 1994, a separate title index also appeared in each issue.
Monthly subject and title indexes (T-AF3) cumulated semi-annually or annually until 1994, when the monthly title index was eliminated and the annual cumulated index was no longer made available in printed form (T-AF2). A marginally-legible cumulated subject, title, and agency index for 1984-1988 was issued in 1989.
A microfiche order form was included in each issue from 1981 until Sep. 1994, when it became a separate quarterly mailing.
Agency periodical titles were listed in a separate annual Texas state documents periodicals supplement from 1977 to 1988 (T-AF4). Monthly issues include entries only for new periodical titles.

Print indexes to Texas state publications (T-AF1) were discontinued in 1994 and replaced by electronic annual indexes. Annual electronic indexes are not interlocking resources. Agency index cumulates the monthly agency and institutions of higher education entries into a single list under each agency and institution name. "Leaflets" listings appearing in the monthly issues are eliminated from the annual indexes. Entries include the same information that appears in the monthly listings, but they are arranged in alphabetical order by title, which places the item entry numbers out of sequence. Agency index is divided into 2-3 alphabetic files each year since 1995. The "Z" section for institutions of higher education usually is a separate file.
Subject index cumulates the monthly subject listings into a single alphabetic sequence. Since 1996, it appears as 2-3 alphabetic files. Until 1999, instead of listing multiple items under a single heading, headings are repeated for each title listed. Entries in the subject index include only 1) the title of the item, 2) Texas documents classification number, and 3) sequential Texas state publications entry number. Finding the fuller description of an item in the electronic agency index is cumbersome, because the subject index does not identify the issuing agency and the listings in the agency index are not in numerical sequence. The most effective method to search the agency index for an item found in the subject index is to search for the sequential item number using the "Find (on this page)" search function of a web browser (usually an "Edit" option). Because in most years the agency index is split into multiple files, it is important to note the letter beginning the Texas documents classification number for the item: it indicates the section of the alphabet which will include the agency issuing the publication. The entry number can be used to locate the full entry sequentially in the printed Texas state publications.

T-AF5 Texas state documents classification scheme: a revision of Texas state documents classification and almost compleat list of Texas state agencies from statehood to the present. Brenda F. Sheldon Olds; rev. by Jane Ann Mullane; Nancy Ursery, ed. Rev. ed. Austin: Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas State Pub. Clearinghouse, Sep. 1984. 1 v. (looseleaf) TexDoc L1900.5 D659c 1984
Designed to provide both a skeletal history of Texas state government agencies and institutions and a classification scheme for the arrangement of state documents and collections.
Agencies and institutions are listed under an alphanumeric classification scheme which reflects the key word in the official agency name. Pt. 1 lists agencies, boards, commissions, interstate compact commissions, state forests, hospitals, parks and schools, regional councils of governments, and several quasi-governmental bodies. Pt. 2, the "Z" scheme, lists state supported colleges, universities, junior colleges, and consortia.
Each agency or institution name is followed by dates of creation, change, and dissolution. Cross references include former and later names of agencies that assume a portion of the duties of the agency. "See" references are included for variant names.
Appendices contain a bibliography, instructions for classifying documents, and lists of legislative sessions, cities and towns, soil conservation districts, parks, and special committees.
Although a more recent classification scheme is available online (T-AF6), the historical detail in this edition makes it still useful.
