On June 2, 1902, over 30 delegates met and established the Texas Library Association (or the Texas State Library Association, as it was known then). Librarians and other library supporters assembled that day with high hopes of creating "an organizations for co-operative effort for the furtherance of this important educational movement [libraries] in Texas."

Today, TLA has over 7200 members and is the largest state library association in the country. Whether promoting intellectual freedom or working to strengthen libraries, the Texas Library Association is the embodiment of all the aspirations first conceived nearly 100 years ago.

TLA's 100th anniversary celebration was a time for reflecting on the achievements of the past and, more importantly, forging the future. The ad hoc Centennial Celebration Committee was charged with planning and coordinating events that captured the spirit of TLA’s rich history and dynamic future. From parties to programs, members’ recollections to public campaigns, TLA’s anniversary was a celebration of libraries and the incomparable individuals who make libraries work.
