In this issue: Budget Hearings and Legislative Day

I. Budget Hearings Set
II. Legislative Day

I. Budget Hearings

The House of Representatives has completed committee assignments, and several key hearings have now been set.

Please note that the Senate Finance Committee met on Monday, February 7, and heard testimony on the Texas Education Agency budget. TLA representatives, including Julie Todaro, Carlyn Gray, and Naomi Bates, testified on the importance of restoring funds for the K-12 databases.

Library supporters are urged to contact their representatives and senators (especially if they serve on either the House Appropriations Committee or the Senate Finance Committee) and ask them to support library programs for these agencies.

Explain why library programs are essential and what the loss of funding for the K-12 databases, TexShare, and Loan Star Libraries (direct aid to public libraries) will mean to the students and people of Texas. Issue sheets are available at http://www.txla.org/take-action. The current draft of the state budget eliminates all state funding for these programs. To learn more, see Texline 265.

To send an email to your state senator and representative on the budget (and do get your friends, groups, and supporters to do so also), go to: Take Action on the Budget <http://capwiz.com/ala/tx/issues/alert/?alertid=22992501&PROCESS=Take+Action> .

To send an email to your state senator and representative about the role of school librarians as teachers (and do get your friends, groups, and supporters to do so also), go to: School Librarians ARE Teachers: http://capwiz.com/ala/tx/issues/alert/?alertid=27086566.

PLEASE BE SURE TO PERSONALIZE THESE MESSAGES. USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND EXAMPLES.

Library supporters able to attend any of these hearings should contact Gloria Meraz (gloriam@txla.org). We need library supporters present!

II. Legislative Day

TLA’s Legislative Day, which will be held on February 16, is an important opportunity to show support for libraries and to advocate to state legislators. If you are able to attend, you can register on site. Training will take place Tuesday, February 15, from 7 to 9 pm at the Hyatt Regency in Austin. Learn more about Legislative Day.

Attendees will participate in visits to various legislator offices on the 16th. All meetings will be coordinated by assigned delegate leaders who will work with their team of library supporters to make all 150 state representatives and 31 senators aware of the needs of Texas libraries.

A. Legislative Day Schedule

Training Events

 • Full Delegate Training, Tues. Feb 15, 2011: 7 pm to 9 pm.
 • Abbreviated Training, Wed. Feb. 16, 2011: 8 am to 9 am.

B. Virtual Legislative Day

If you can’t be in Austin on February 16, make a local event out of getting friends and supporters to send in messages to state legislators on that day. Send emails, faxes, or make phone calls! Get students and patrons to help!

You can use the links above to send emails. To get additional contact information, go to Who Represents Me.

 • Do take the opportunity to write letters to the editor.
 • Contact your local media about library funding.
 • Inform people around you -- administrators, community powerbrokers, student groups, PTAs. Show them how they can save state funding for libraries. Use Facebook, Twitter, and your local community groups to get the word out about saving library funding.

Here’s a sample message (with links) to post on Facebook.

Texas Library Association <http://www.facebook.com/TexasLibraryAssociation> ake Action NOW!! This link is set up to send an email to your legislators. You can customize your message to describe the negative impact of budget cuts. Pass this link along to everyone and anyone to have them send an email to help restore library funding.
